Right on Middlefield Rd closer to 5th Ave, there's street or neighborhood parking. Very small shop so not really recommended for groups larger than 4 (otherwise you may have to wait for them to combine tables as they have a constant flow of customers coming in and out). No outdoor seating. Bathroom is in the back where the kitchen is located. I wouldn't recommend going as it is as big as a tiny broom closet with hardly any room to stand inside. One large TV that wasn't turned on. We came here after a hike and the BF's parents wanted something warm to eat and settled on pho instead of making chirashi at home. The restaurant didn't sell any dishes I was really looking for (bun rieu, bun bo hue or banh mi bo kho) but they do sell Banh Hoi (thin rice noodle paddies cut in squares) which surprised me as not many places do. Our Order: Heo Cuon: ($5.25) aka Nem Nuong Cuon. Fresh Grilled Pork Spring Rolls served w/ House Fish Sauce Goi Cuon: ($5.25) Fresh Shrimp Spring Roll served w/ House Peanut Sauce Pho Do Bien: Seafood Noodle w/ Prawns, Fish Balls and Squid Pho Dac Biet: Combination Pho w/ Round Steak, Well-done Brisket, Tendon and Tripe Cafe Sua Nong: ($3.25) Hot Vietnamese Coffee w/ Condensed Milk BF had initially wanted the Pho Duoi Bo (Oxtail Noodle Soup) but they were sold out. When all the pho bowls came out, they only had bean sprouts, lime, and jalapeno peppers. Apparently they were out of basil as well =/ I had ordered a small bowl of Pho Dac Biet. The broth was oily and flavor-wise, on the watery. My BF actually used the fish sauce from the Heo Cuon to add flavor to the soup. The spring rolls were mostly noodles and little of the protein which is why I usually don't order them and just make them myself at home. The Cafe Sua Nong was nice and strong. Though found it interesting that the drip filter came out on a coffee cup and saucer with a glass of hot water to refill. Tables barely big enough to hold all of our orders so it felt very crowded while we were eating. At least some of the items were eventually cleared when other orders came to the table but they didn't come back to check up on us to clear away other dishes or refill waters. Note: They're available on FLUC

More like 3.5 stars, but I'll round it up because it is the closest pho place around my work. The pho is fairly tasting, can definitely satisfy my craving for a hot bowl of noodle soup (hey, can't be that picky given my work location). The imperial roll is pretty good. Would definitely recommend it as an appetizer. Service is typical.

This place has the best pho in Redwood City. No doubt. I tried them all. Place gets packed fast during weekday lunches because it's good. Don't know why people on here complained about the portions and/or service. Don't get a small size then penny pinchers. Portions were huge for my medium size pho and my coworkers large size was humorous. Gigantic. Egg rolls are a must order here. Going back for sure. Worth the drive for all you workers in Redwood City looking for SJ style pho. Skip Pho Dong and Mays.

Great food but the older lady running it is shady. She charged us $25 more for our bill. Definitely watch your bill with her cause she will charge some plates twice trying to pull a fast one.

Good food, good prices, good service. A perfect everyday place to grab some Vietnamese food.

We came for a quick Vietnamese dish on a Friday night. The expectation was low since it's in Menlo Park but it turns out to be really good pho and other appetizers. We order a spring roll dish with half shrimp and half pork portion $6.5 is usually pricey but it came out very fresh and really good. Also ordered a imperial roll dish and it came out fresh and reminds me of home cooked meal. We also order 1 large pho and 1 medium pho, both with less noodle. The portion came out still too generous we didn't finish it except for the meat. The broth was good and not too fatty. Overall it was a 4 stars for food quality but I would give this a 5 since food came out really fast and fresh even at the closing hour. They should really reduce the amount of noodle for the bowl though. It's $9.5 and the bowl probably can feed 5 of me. I'd be happy to pay $9.5 for half of that bowl.

Hometown Noodle is the best place for delicious Vietnamese food in the Menlo Park/Redwood city area. Don't be fooled by the neighborhood or the exterior which is covered up with pictures of their food. This restaurant has reasonably priced food with traditional flavors, which is hard to find in the Bay Area these days! Entrees: The beef pho combination and the chicken pho are both solid. The broth is flavorful and they are generous with the meat portions and sides. I love squeezing fresh lime and adding thai-basil and bean sprouts to my broth. I wasn't the biggest fan of the seafood pho -- the broth was lacking in flavor and I don't think the seafood was the freshest. The lemon grass chicken, grilled pork, and lightly cooked beef are spot on in terms of bold flavors. On my most recent visit, I ordered the beef which was so juicy and tender. If you are craving an appetizer, the shrimp spring rolls and the fried taro rolls are both delicious in their own right. The spring rolls are fresh and light while the taro rolls are bursting with flavor and fried to a light crisp. I've only dined-in and the food usually comes out pretty fast within 5-10 minutes. I always get a thai iced tea or coconut drink with my meal! Servers are friendly but casual. This is now my go-to pho place and I plan on coming back to try more of their dishes. Parking can be a bit painful in this area so you may need to check out the side streets. Check the curbs around the intersection to see if any 1 hour parking is available. FYI- If you increase your pho size from L to XL, it seems like they only increase the amount of noodles and not the meats. Also, I believe the minimum credit card charge is around $12-15 dollars so keep this in mind if you need to split any bills.

Hometown Noodle is always good and always satisfies. My only gripe is that parking is a problem. But with that said the pho is always good, vermicelli bowls are cold and delicious (pork & imperial roll is my favorite). spring rolls are nice and the imperial rolls are my favorite. Service is hit or miss depending on how busy they are. Be warned the matriarch of the business doesn't take crap. :-) Keep it simple and don't ask for anything crazy when it comes time to pay the bill and you will do just fine.

Trying to find the best word to describe the food. It's not bad but it's definitely not great Vietnamese food. Lets use the word...boring. The beef pho broth had some flavor but was borderline on the bland side. The shrimp spring rolls were good...but they cut off the ends of the spring rolls so when I'm about two bites away from finishing my roll, everything squeezes out into my hand. :( Hubby ordered the chicken rice dish and egg rolls. The rice dish was decent but the egg rolls were terrible. They use the same egg roll wrappers you would get with Chinese takeout. It's thick and chewy. Vietnamese egg rolls are supposed to be crunchy and flaky.

I came here with a couple of friends, I had went a previous time and had good service from the Hispanic gentlemen! But this one star was for a couple of nights ago I believe the owner (older woman). I think it all has to do with a language barrier she gave us our bill which came out to 103 we all paid and then she came at us saying that we hadn't payed for this and that. So we payed because we wanted to get out of there!we all counted what we had payed at the very end and it came out to be 140 smh she came up with an easy buck. Will not go back!

Delicious pho! I usually get #11 with no tripe. Size small is big enough, I can barely finish that size. Their chicken fried rice is really tasty too, if you like spicy food you can get the rice extra spicy. Only negatives is there is NO PARKING. It took me looking for over ten minutes circling and finally had to park blocks away in a residential area and walk. Also, the restaurant does not have AC/does not use it and it gets really hot and stuffy. The food is great, the location is horrible.

Came here for dinner with a friend. We ordered the fried egg rolls to share and it was super yummy. The egg rolls came out freshly fried and still warm, and it goes very well with the sauce provided. Highly recommended. I ordered the cold noodles (bun) with grilled shrimp and beef rolls. They have it in small and large size (extra $1), and small was good enough for me. The fish sauce goes very well with the bun, and the shrimp was fresh. The beef roll was chewy and not overcooked. Overall pleasant and rather affordable dinner :)

Decent pho. Not the best I have ever had but not bad. Serving portions were quite large. Even the small was pretty large. Note: difficult to find parking for some reason even though it was not yet noon on a weekday. Had to circle the block once.

I like the pho I use to mostly go because my gf loves their shrimp chow mein their food is good what kills it it's the old lady attitude. She ignores me when I'm trying to pay, mugs me when we are getting hot sauce, gets irritated when I ask her for lemon. When i order to go and I ask for little cups to get oil hot sauce she laughed and said only one I told her I would pay her for 3 small plastic cup containers which she accepted, ... I'm never going back, there's better pho places with better service

This place, I went with my service dog with my husband and my caregiver. I an disabled with ALS using respirator machine, and my dog is a licensed service dog, and the minute I walked in they said that they were refusing service unless the dog stayed outside. We told then that the my setvice dog had the right to be with me quietly sitting under the table. So, we ended up calling a police after we got kicked out of the place. We waited just a few minutes for the police to arrive, meantime all the customers came out to support me that the owner was at wrong. If people are from foreign country and wants to run a business, I think they should know the federal law that protects people with disability. I have other choices to dine. I hope they learned their lessons when the two officers came to speak to them about the law.

The secret of good pho lies in the broth, & Hometown no doubt has excellent pho! ("fuh", not "foe", foo!) Sure, it's not in the nicest 'hood & parking can isn't plentiful but I can deal so I'm sure you can too ;) A young man took our orders immediately after we sat down. We got pho w/ beef brisket + egg noodles w/ prawns & bbq pork. The meats tasted tender & flavorful and the noodles were the right texture. It looks like some yelpers are distraught with the service but on the night I came, the man dealt with diners + take-out orders in a kind, professional manner. He went to hold the door open for a fellow with multiple take out boxes & definitely did not seem rude at all. Made for a good casual dining experience. I'll be back when I'm in a soup-y mood! :)

This place, hands down, has some of the tastiest Vietnamese food I have ever had. The service is friendly, the food is prepared quickly, and their beer selection is pretty decent for a mom and pop phö shop. We had the pork spring roles and coconut curry - definitely must haves. The decor is a little outdated, but I didn't expect much, so no complains there. This feels like a secret spot where you'd take a bae on a fourth a fifth date (not trying to impress on aesthetics, but definitely on the hunt for a good meal)

I mean Hometown Noodle is a small restaurant with an assortment of Viet dishes. It can be a bit crowded on busy days due to the size of the shop so plan around the rush. The food is delicious and the orders come out reasonably fast. The owner can be a bit intimidating due to her personality. She is not the friendliest person but I overlook this minor detail because of the generous portions and good price. I normally get the rice plates with (coconut) curry chicken or lemon grass chicken while occasionally some pho on a cold day. Overall a great place for a quick sit down with friends or coworkers!

A bit more surly than usual when I stopped by for a Tuesday lunch, but amazing pho. They didn't give me very much basil and would charge for more. $.50 charge for credit card charges under $15

Got chicken soup this time and it was perfect! Great broth, tender chicken meat and well cooked noodles! The only thing I would like to suggest is giving us extra packets of sauce. We had the food to go and realized there wasn't enough sauce for everyone. Rice plate was also very delicious and large portions of meat and shrimp!

Accessibility (Parking / Wait Time) 0/1 Star: hard to find parking. The area is ghetto. 15 minute wait. _____ Service (Waiter / Cleanness / Ambiance) 0/1 Star: told the waiter we were ready to order the moment we sat down. She didn't take our order for another 5 minutes. Cramp seating. Ordered drinks and did not get them. Ordered without greens and they filled my bowl with onions and cilantro. _____ Taste (0=Not Edible / 1=Edible / 2=Good (average) / 3=Must Try!) 0/3 Stars: I ordered without greens and they put a lot in my bowl. They were too busy to fix it. The noodles, soup, an even the meat tasted like cilantro which I hate! Didn't eat much of it. Not edible if you hate cilantro. _____ Overall Experience 0/5 Stars _____ Last Words Yes 0 stars. I think it's the first or second time I've ever given any place 0 stars. Never going back!

A little disappointed today to discover that their noodle soup listed for $7.50 on their menu on hometownnoodle.net was $12.50 when I picked it up. I can chalk up some of that being due to the extra materials they have to give out for takeout (even though they seemed to forget utensils - they're some lost costs there, but it doesn't make a $5 extra charge ok. Felt it was a very shady practice.

I wish I could give them a no star for how horrible their service was today. My son loves their grilled pork and egg rolls so we came here to celebrate on his last day of school. He was very excited as soon as he walked in. He started ordering - this is my 6 year old lol. I had a huge breakfast so I got 2 Thai tea and one grilled pork with egg rolls rice plate. She seemed very surprised. "Oh just one person is eating" I asked for a high chair for my 1 yr old. She basically pushed it at us that got in the way of another table. I asked her to move it to our table and she just walked away. We confronted her about her service and she basically said we require everyone to order a plate and whatever service you're expecting, We don't provide it here. Note to owner - we order out from you most of the time. We love your food and get a lot of food when we are hungry. But because of today we won't be returning. We went to pho dong and my son was fine with their food and even he compared the service. I don't understand how you can allow someone like her to represent your place. This happened around 2pm on June 25th, 2014 take a look at the schedule and get rid of her. Thank you!

Food is fine but they charge you for everything!! Every customer must order their own dish, no sharing There's a charge for using credit card There's even a charge for getting food to go, $0.50 for the box Not to mention the tiniest bathroom I have ever seen. At least it had hot water and soap.

Loved it here. Just simple and good. Location: one little restaurant in a block of businesses joined on either side. Not that it really looks special from the outside, but it's not too hard to spot as it's basically the only asian restaurant in a sea of mexican stores in the area! Parking is on the street. Restaurant is close to the intersection of 5th Ave and Middlefield. Staff: Friendly, seat you quickly, check on you for your order promptly. It's not the type of place where they check on you a bunch to see if you need anything. But in this case, I didn't mind. It's one of those simple, asian noodle type places where you order your bowl of soup, eat it, and go. But there are staff members that always seemed to be visible if you needed to waive them down for something. When we waived them over for a box and our check they were quick. Food: I ordered a iced coffee and Bun dish with BBQ chicken. Let's just those 2 items I ordered are now my latest obsession. Loved my food, couldn't believe I ate the large (I'm small and usually can only fit so much in me, and usually order the small-- but in this case, I ate a huge portion). The BBQ chicken was amazing in addition to all the fresh veggies and vermicelli in my big bowl. My coffee was good too. Super strong, but that's how it's suppose to be. I like having a lot of ice and letting it melt a little bit before I drink it. But the coffee was really smooth, and just a great rich, bold flavor. They didn't overload the drink with too much condensed milk either. I do have a sweet tooth, but the amount they put in, I think, was perfect. Pricing: cheap/normal. And I like that they take credit. A lot of asian restaurants, especially the noodle houses don't always take card. Return factor: Most definitely. I hope I come back soon.

Customer service is crappy. The young lady sucks. i dont know how else to say it. I found a small piece of metal in my food. I almost broke my teeth chewing it. Overall, ive been going here for awhile. I think the food is OK to decent. The customer service sucks. Sometimes i get crap in my food.

-TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE- I usually don't take the time to write a negative review, but this had to be done. I ordered fresh spring rolls without the vermicelli noodles to-go/delivered. They misunderstood my order and gave me a plate of vermicelli. I ha

Remember to come here if you want to be ignored. The loud asian lady was annoyed when I asked for an extra bowl. Poor nice parents who were working so hard... Food was decent, but who needs attitude when there are so many other good Vietnamese places around. The one on Broadway is much better and so much nicer! Parking was terrible here. Will not be going there again. Wow, the egg rolls were good, but they were really as tiny as lumpias and were 6.50 for 5.

This place rocks! My friends and I have been to Hometown Noodle several times and we all loved it. Food is fresh and so DELICIOUS, servers are nice and friendly and the place itself is very clean. Some of our favorites were the Combination Pho (the best in the area!), Hometown Wrap (little egg rolls with shrimp, crab and taro) and Imperial Egg Rolls, Shrimp Spring Rolls, Beef Rolls, Bun with Egg Rolls, Grilled Pork and shrimp and their freshly squeezed lemonade.

  • Christina W.

Oh where to begin ... My engineering team is kind of obsessed with Hometown. We go two or three times a week during the winter. I have insisted we don't go this week because it's been 80° out and you can't have pho when it's 80° out. "But, xtina, they eat pho year round in Vietnam". Seriously, that's the worst argument ever. No. So, if/when you ever go at lunchtime and see 10-15 people occupying most of the tables, that's us. Sorry :) Call ahead! I haven't yet encountered anything I don't like. The shrimp spring rolls are fantastic. The pho is great (of course). Even the rice plates and salads are delicious. Consistently a little too much food, so you never go hungry and even have a little leftover to share. Parking kinda sucks. It's in little Mexico soo there's a lot of stores and not a lot of parking. Try down the street next to the cell phone store - there's usually some when you get more into the residential area.

This is probably my favorite place to go for pho at the moment. I either get beef or chicken pho and the vegetarian spring rolls (I love their peanut sauce). This is the only place I like chicken pho from. They use shredded chicken instead of weird chunks of chicken breast. It's very consistent here/always good.

Service 2 stars not very friendly and asked for to go container - it finally came almost 10 minutes later. Food 2 stars - seafood pho soup was bland. Cleanliness 2 stars - I used a napkin to pick up the sauce bottles .. They were sticky. Wonder when was the last time they wiped it.

Hometown Noodle is your standard pho restaurant. Nothing super special about the location or the food. However, if you're craving some quick Vietnamese food, I couldn't recommend it enough. First of all, it's very very clean. I love to use all the sauces when I'm eating Pho but I get creeped out when it looks like everything's been sitting out gathering dust for years. You'll find no old dried chili sauce stuck to the top of the condiments jars or dried lipstick on the chopsticks. Quality of the food is also good. My husband loves that they only use chicken breast in their chicken pho. No gristle here! The neighborhood is a little sketchy but totally worth it to escape the overpriced establishments on University Ave. Service is quick/clean, food is good and best of all, prices are great (rare in the Menlo Park/Palo Alto area!) Our go-to place whenever we don't want to cook.

Absolutely solid pho tai. Also helps they're about two blocks from my apartment, so I can just walk there. A soda is 1.75. Plan accordingly. PS: they don't have bun bo hue here. :(

  • Abigail V.

Parking sucks really bad. They don't have their own parking lot so you have to park in the residential or get lucky after the 3rd go around right in front of the shop. Place is kinda small but service was good and was packed the entire time I was there. Got the pho on a nice cold day and was definitely worth driving 15 min to find decent parking. I also felt like we were in little Mexico or something because it was a hole in the wallish restaurant in the cut!

I have a love /hate relationship with this place. I love the food and sometimes the service. I consider the ladies there rude -the way they speak to customers is very short, I've been bumped into more than once, insisting on a bigger tip - it could be a cultural thing but the food is good so normally I don't trip. I told them I was going to give them a bad yelp review and I am a couple months behind on that promise, but here it is. This is our work's go to Pho place (there was another place in RWC called SABA - it was further away , a tad more expensive, cleaner and nicer staff but alas it closed), and one of our doctor's requested Hometown Noodle for her birthday, we got the menu off of their website, money was collected, order was called in and when we went to pick it up - Surprise! it was way more than expected. When I explained the discrepancy to the older lady (I think she is the aunt of the owner), she basically said she couldn't understand because of our language barrier, that there was nothing she could do because the owner was out of the country for a few weeks, and even though she was the one in charge there was nothing she could (or would) do. One of the wait staff said that they updated their menu but when I grabbed one of their pre-printed to go menus right there in front of them, the prices were the same as online! Oh, so it was only their sit down fancy menus that were updated. Good customer service would be to own up to their mistake and honor the online/to go menu price. I tried to insist and the lady even laughed at me a bit when I said I was going to give them a bad review. So my co-worker had to shell out an extra $30 because we obviously had not collected enough it and it was way too late to cancel the order. To be honest I have tried to hold a grudge, not eat there on the principality of the issue (Big Perm!) but I love their Pho, shrimp spring rolls, their rice noodles with shrimp and pork.. so I am a slave to my stomach! Bottom line - food is good, service is not. It gets packed at lunch & parking can be hard to find

For what it is, this place is great. (And they do Fluc!) Their soups are fresh and well seasoned, and the spring rolls that are eaten wrapped in lettuce cause me frequent cravings. It's a dive, don't kid yourself. Don't take a date there unless you know they're cool with a kind of dingy atmosphere, but terrific food. Okay, even the service is kind of lacking, but the food makes up for it.

The food here is amazing! Service is great. I eat a lot of Pho and hometown noodle is super fresh with great broth. We also enjoy their shrimp spring roll and tofu curry. It is in an odd location and it's easy to miss unless you're looking for it, but why wouldn't you be looking for it?

This is the best spot for pho in the menlo park redwood city area. Trust me, I eat a lot of pho.I wouldnt say that their rice or dry noodle dishes are the best but their pho is on point. Broth is perfectly seasoned and piping hot. Noodles still maintain their chewiness towards the end of the meal Meatballs r very very good. I asked the owner if they were made there. He said they are ordered from a distributor and agreed that they were good from the many compliments his clients give him. We go there at least once a week and in the winter, twice a week.

My mother and I are big fans of Vietnamese PHO, actually it was my mom who introduced me to PHO several years ago and we love our noodles. Having lived for over 40 years in this neighborhood where Mexican food dominates the area, having an exotic choice like Vietnamese became a favorite choice on occasion, due to proximity and quality of food, but it now seems that we will no longer patronize this place. On Thursday, January 2 my mother (a diabetic) and her in laws (one a retired priest) all are seniors, had a poor experience. I feel it is important that you be aware of the strange behavior of the owner of the restaurant. My mother, with sincere displeasure, sadness and eventually became ill after this episode, shared this experience with me. What occurred was during the busy lunch time, my mother and in laws sat down not more than 10-15 minutes, note my mother's in-law has a poor appetite, so she was not going to eat. My mother had ordered a soup as did her other in-law, being the person she is she wanted share her soup, but when my mother asked for an additional small bowl, the owner adamantly stated that she would not give her the extra bowl and insisted that another soup be purchased. When the additional soup was refused, the owner in a loud tone insisted that my mother and party leave, and repeatedly stated to "GO, Go, Go...Go!" So embarrassed and dejected they left. On that day for some reason the owner was not friendly like in the past, at least not towards my family. All in all my mother and family were kicked out without being served and all over the request for a small empty bowl. I only hope it was a case of just having a bad day and not a racial issue, since I know that the patronage comes from the predominately Hispanic neighborhood. Until the owner apologizes, this establishment will be off limits and I'm still planning on having a word with the owner.

Parking was really difficult to find, especially since it is sort of in the ghettos and we didn't want to park too far from the main road. Pho broth was actually really good. We didn't taste too much msg or fat. The lady even asked one of my friends if he wanted only white meat or is dark meat okay for his chicken pho. Usually the restaurants would give whatever meat is easier for them, so that was nice. The pho bowls also came with lots of noodles. The imperial rolls were like egg rolls but with a different wrap. It almost looked like they took vermicelli and deep fried it. Still tasty and crunchy. Good place for a quick bowl of pho. We'll probably be back if we're in the area.

I discovered Hometown Noodle while looking for a place close to Palo Alto for dinner. The reviews here convinced me to give them a try, and I almost decided to pass when I got to the neighborhood cos it was fairly ghetto. I might have passed had I not found a spot right in front of the restaurant! I had the sauteed chicken curry with rice, while my mom had the prawns with egg noodles, and both of us really liked our dinner. The curry was tasty, and had a sweet taste to it, while the egg noodles were cooked to the perfect consistency (am I even using the right word to describe cooking noodles?). The restaurant was pretty quiet on a Sunday evening, but I was told by the staff that they get busy during lunch over the work week. I'm dying to go back to try other dishes. Yummy!

Great place for a quick dinner. Pho chicken noodle soup is my favorite. Service is good. Just know that it's a tiny place and it gets packed for lunch. It's located in the part of town that is primarily Hispanic markets and restaurants. We locals refer to this part of Redwood City as little Mexico. ;)

I had the Crispy Salted Shrimp plate. Shrimps were not crispy at all - just soft and the dough on the outside was mushy and slimy. Had diarrhea afterwards.

HORRIBLE sandwich, my first time seeing a sesame hot dog bun used for banh mi. $5 per sandwich is not expensive, but the sandwich is not $5 worth. stick with the noodles...

Went here one evening with a co-worker while on a business trip. We're both fans of pho, and of spicy foods. We had the spring rolls as an appetizer. Very tasty, not too greasy, and full of goodness. Just a smidge of their pepper sauce did the trick to start warming us up. Treat the darker jar with respect. Then ordered the pho. The bowl was ENORMOUS! Broth was good, with some nice complexity to it. Fresh basil and bean sprouts on the side, lots of goodness in the bowl. One of the best pho places, and probably passed over more than it should be, because of the location. If you're in the Redwood City area, and want good pho, go here.

Thumbs down on the service here. I think the man didn't even acknowledge my order and walked away... And it wasn't very busy at that time. Didn't get my drink until I was paying and about to walk out the door. The Thai tea was too sweet. Spring rolls were very good and peanut sauce was right on.

Vietnamese noodles in taqueria row...whoaaa. Serious mix of culture here. This place has a pretty solid broth, and they also have a more interesting menu than a lot of typical pho places. Otherwise, there's not a lot of differences between this and any other places around. If you're looking for good broths instead of quick eats, try it, and see if it suits your liking.

The owner belligerently yells and berates her employees in the back, loud enough for diners to stop talking and look to see what the commotion is about. It was so uncomfortable that I had to walk to the back and tell the owner (female) that we can all hear her and it's making me feel uncomfortable. She gave me the look of death. Ive witnessed her on one other occasion do the same thing to another employee in the front of the house as well, but I didn't say anything then. I don't see that employee around anymore.. I've been coming here on and off for about 2 years with my fiancé and honesty it's pretty decent pho. But I will NEVER come again and support an owner who is a complete witch and treats her employees with disrespect and verbally abuses them repeatedly. They also nickel and dime for everything additional (ie $2 for side of sliced raw onions!) the owner is treats people with disrespect and should not be supported with my or your business. Goodbye and please get some anger management lady! There are other nearby pho places that serve up a hot bowl of pho with a smile and know how to properly train and coach their employees without talking down to them.

GOOD STUFF! Way better than Pho Dong if we're doing a RWC pho comparison. Broth is rich with flavor and the round steak was definitely better quality. I can tell they put it into the bowl later on because it isn't tough and overcooked. I got my small bowl of pho with round steak, tendon, and tripe and they definitely don't overload the ingredients which you can define as good or bad. Location is funny in that EVERYTHING around it is Mexican. Because of this reason, prices are much more reasonable than Pho Dong. Even with an almost filled restaurant, the food comes out lightning fast. That's expected from any pho restaurant. Thumbs up!

Great pho, but the real show stoppers are the pork spring rolls and the Bahn Mì pork sandwiches!!! Don't get put off by brusque service- that is a sign of a legit Vietnamese staff. Definitely a great spot in RWC, but be prepared for huge crowds at lunch

I never realized how hard it was to find good pho, until one day I was craving pho and figured out we don't have many decent options in this area. Let's be honest the pho in Redwood City isn't going to be the best pho you ever had in your life. But hey who knew there would be decent pho in the middle of a bunch of mini marts and taquerias? My friend and I met up for lunch here on a weekday. They were really busy. In fact there was a crowd lingering by the doorway waiting for tables to open up. The staff was ready for people to leave too. As soon as your bowl looked mostly done they rushed to you table to take away your dishes. Which was weird because they didn't even give us a menu, we had to ask for it. If they want people out in a timely manner then maybe they should work on making sure all the tables have everything (utensils, menus, napkins, sauces) so that people don't spend 15 minutes of their meal time trying to hunt down a waiter/waitress. The food came out quickly though so i'll give them that. I got the well done brisket pho and it was satisfying. Definitely better than I thought it would be. The broth was nice and flavorful and the brisket was good quality. The spring rolls were also tasty! Don't pass on those, the peanut sauce is nice and creamy and maybe even a little fishy (not in the smelly way but in the fish sauce kind of way). If you're craving pho in RWC check this place out!

I only go here because its near my living area, but I can't believe she wanted to charge me 1.00 for a extra lemon, every pho place I go to has never done this, food is nothing special and the old lady has way too much attitude. Not coming here again I tried to give it a second chance but I just can't sorry.

At one point, we loved this place so much that we stopped by at least once every week. We probably over did it, because we haven't gone back in months. FOOD: I'm not a fan of the pho here as the soup/broth tastes strangely herby to me. Perhaps that's what authentic pho is supposed to be, but it's just not my cup of tea. However, we love the BUNs, especially the bun with filet mignon. The meat is tender and juicy - very delicious. Chicken salad is also our staple appetizer item - I highly recommend this. Bun with grilled chicken and Rice with lemon grass chicken are both good, too. Lastly, we often take out a few Vietnamese sandwiches on our way home. They're decent for the price. SERVICE AND AMBIANCE: The lady (presumably the owner) is a little intimidating at first, but she treats her customers with care. The place is quite run down but not necessarily dirty. Parking can be a challenge. SUM: This place is still one of our favorite Vietnamese joints in the Bay Area.

Best place for Pho in Redwood city. Hands down. It isn't much for atmosphere or service (only like 1 person really speaks and understands english well enough to answer questions), but the food more than makes up for it. Seriously, try it. You won't be disappointed.

Stopped by for the second time but didn't remember the first visit until we got our bill, then we remembered - the place was overpriced and the quality was just okay! Still felt the same about this place. We ordered a large and an extra large pho with one iced coffee, but the bill was $29.81. We can't figure out the math but let's just try to remember next time to skip this stop and keep driving. On the food: we can hardly scope out the meat because there weren't much, maybe the bowls were just too big. The soup was okay. The coffee was quite good.

Staying from out of town and decided to let the Yelp gods figure out where to eat.... Made the right choice. It is a tight squeeze so ordering ahead for take-out is strongly suggested. This is not the most fab neighborhood but who cares with food this great? When you walk in you realize that they have fans with different ages and stages... The food?! Not greasy at all yet still full over flavor! This is a MUST!

Ever since my friend introduced me to Hometown Noodle I have became a regular! Food is very fresh and the staff is very friendly. They definitely won the best pho award! The menu is great for vegetarians and meat eaters too. I now have all my friends hooked :)

I was appalled when I got charged for tea! You go to any asian restuarants and tea is automatically complimentary. Aside from charging me $1 for tea, there was definitely a lot of MSG in the pho. The only redeeming value was their portion was pretty large.

I ordered the coconut curry chicken. In retrospect, I probably should have ordered noodles at a place that has "noodles" in the name, that said, if a restaurant is going to offer an item on their menu they should give it the same care and attention that they do every other item on their menu. It was okay - edible, but not very good. Perhaps I'm just not accustomed to Vietnamese curry - I actually didn't even realize that curry was a thing in Vietnamese cooking, and I'm still not clear if it is or if this place is just offering it as a catch-all Asian cuisine item for people who might be craving Thai. Anyway, it wasn't very good. Way too coconut-y and not much else beyond that. The flavor was very dull, and it was mixed with green peppers - not the best flavor combination with curry. The staff seemed to forget they were working at a restaurant where people might want to relax and enjoy their food, and instead behaved as if they were rude customers. A woman sitting behind the register had her cell phone on speaker as she waited on hold and then dialed her way through an automated system for a bank or phone company or the like. When I'm eating I really don't care to listen to a robot lady announcing: "press one for... press two for..." over and over again. Once that was over, then two of the staff started messing with what seemed like the soda machine. It must have stopped working or one of the canisters must have been out, because they kept pressing the soda tab over and over making that obnoxious buzzing sound that a soda jerk makes. The woman who served us completely ignored us at the end of our meal, and when I went to the counter to ask her for the check, a man at the counter who clearly worked there just stood there and stared at me without saying a word, and then when I looked back at him he must have gotten nervous that I might ask him for something, so he got up and went to the back of the house. When the waitress finally noticed me she made eye contact, and then walked right by without saying anything. I had to stop her and ask for the check. Bad service and mediocre food. I definitely will not be returning.

Hometown Noodle isn't great Vietnamese food, but at times, its good enough. Living in Oakland spoiled me on good Vietnamese food; Hometown Noodle feels rather bland and mediocre by comparison. Dishes seem driven by salt and grease with little nuance in flavor. Pho broth and meats taste one dimensional. Fried items have the taste and texture of having been cooked in old oil. However, I work nearby, so the convenience of having *any* Vietnamese options works in Hometown Noodle's favor. The ingredients seem fresh *enough*, and when I am tired of tacos (rare, but it happens) it's good to have options in this area. When you just want a big bowl of soup, cheap and fast, Hometown Noodle can do the job. I wouldn't turn down an invite to eat here, but if I'm craving solid, interesting Vietnamese food, I'd go elsewhere.

So everyone comes here for pho, which is fine. However, you should really try their bun cha. It is to die for! Grilled pork with noodles in a vinegary sauce with tiny egg rolls on the side. Seriously as good as I had in Vietnam (only cleaner). This is definitely my go to spot now for Vietnamese food. Love the cute little owners as well.

The sign on the building reads. "Best Pho in town" and it doesn't lie. This place may be the best kept secret of redwood city. What am I doing telling you all. :-) No really if you want some great food at good prices give this place a try. Nothing fancy at all, just really great food.

The pho is tasty here, and being that it is one of the only places in our area, we have visited or picked up from this restaurants upwards of 10 times. Unfortunately, we will not be frequenting as often, if at all. On my last visit, I ordered food to go. I asked for an itemized receipt, so the lady behind the counter printed out a copy and walked me through it. When she came to the last $1.50, she told me that I was being charged for to go containers. Really? I have never been charged for take out containers from that restaurant or any other. The lady was defensive when I questioned her about it and called the owner immediately....and proceeded to hand me the phone. I explained that I had been going there for years and had never been charged for to go containers. She said that containers are expensive and instead of raising the prices of the soup, they now add on a fee for the containers. I was kind of dumbfounded. They charge between $8 and $9 for a bowl of broth, noodles and some veggies. Sounds like a good deal for them, to me. Being that this is the only pho restaurant nearby, we may return if we are craving a bowl. But I feel that they are being deceitful with this fee and never would have told me if it had I not asked for them to explain the bill to me. Definitely left a bad taste in my mouth.

I eat here weekly, if you live near Redwood City and like Vietnamese you should too! :) Otherwise, if you haven't had Vietnamese before - start with this spot. Delish, not expensive at all, fast, friendly... 3 blocks away. Much love for Hometown Noodle.

Ordered to go: Shrimp rolls......I liked these a lot. Seafood Noodle soup......this was okay Shrimp rolls in rice paper(cold)......these were good. Side order of Grilled pork......$9.95......this was good as well. Two Grilled pork sandwiches.....$4.95 each....they were good. Overall, I thought was very good. The total bill came to $46.00. However, get this, I was billed $1.00 for take out containers. $1.00???? Should just build it into the price. What is next? tissue....forks.....toothpicks???

Was very excited to find this place in my neighborhood, as the food is delicious. Started coming here regularly for lunch, until three weeks later I found a dead cockroach in my noodle dish. Reading through the Yelp reviews, it looks like I am not the first person that this has happened to..

Been here once with a friend while visiting at Stanford. While it sucks that it's not that close to campus, the food is pretty good. We got both a pho and a rice plate, and the portions were pretty generous. Not as cheap as what you can find back in the city, but out here in Palo Alto this is probably as good as you can get with the price. Service is okay as well.

Ok... so the food was probably decent. Nothing to write home about--I've eaten plenty of incredible Vietnamese dishes, in the US and in Vietnam--but decent enough that I would've come back if I worked near this place or had something else going on nearby. But after the crappy service we received by the owner, you couldn't pay me to frequent this establishment. Our family, a group of six (4 adults and 2 kids) came in between lunch and dinner. The place was clearly open, yet empty of patrons. The server, a youngish, nice girl, seated us and gave us menus. We were seated for less than a minute when the owner came out from the back/kitchen and scolded the server for seating us there and then came over to us and complained that we were in the seats/at the table of a reserved party that is going to show up in 30 min. OK... then move us. And do it without bitching about it. But no...She moved us, complaining the whole time, and then rushed us to order. We ended up taking longer to order because we were trying to decide to stay or go. There was a point when I looked over at my sister and uncle and said, "What a bitch. Let's just get the fuck outta here." But we ended up staying because my mom was on a time crunch and she didn't want to look for another place to eat. The owner herself took our orders. And it wasn't because she was trying to go the extra mile with customer service. It really seemed like she was just a micro-managing control freak with the way she spoke to her staff... you know, the attitude that everyone else is incompetent and I have to do this myself. She treated them as if they were "the help." Extremely rude and condescending. When she got to me, I put in an order for a bún dish and asked for an extra plate for my 7 year old. She responded by telling me that I need to order a separate dish for my daughter because everyone at the table needs to order something (my niece, the other kid, who was 11 had already ordered a dish). What!? I questioned this because 1) that's just absurd, especially considering that they don't have kid sized portions, and 2) nowhere on the menu did it state that. She got even more snappy and tried to tell me that every "Asian restaurant" works that way. Like it's an Asian thing that I'm not aware of because I'm not Asian. She must've thought that we came to her place just having crawled out from under a rock... (insert sarcasm) Oh thank you so much for your knowledge you dropped on us about your Asian culture. Better yet, let's just really say it for what it is and call it "knowledge" from a bitchy owner who doesn't seem to appreciate other races patronizing her place. Which is stupid considering where she's located--latino central. The experience didn't get any better. And, honestly, my review doesn't begin to paint the true picture of what a nasty person she was with us. The server was nice enough to leave a tip for, but we didn't want the owner to get it, so we cleverly slipped her gratuity without the owner's knowledge. I don't know why she would choose to go into a business where she has public contact. If she just loves making food, then she should stick to the kitchen and leave the customer contact to someone... nice. I'd rather eat at a place with average food but pleasant people than a place with good food but unkind people.

Decent pho. I ordered the x-large pho and they gave very little meat, like I was ordering a small size bowl of pho. X-Large had a ton of noodles and that was what I felt like I was eating the entire time. I was hoping this was gonna be a great hole in the wall, but it was just decent at best. Personally, I can't say I'd ever come back... Once you had good pho, decent just doesn't cut it...

  • Birdee Q.

I have been coming to this place for a year. The pho is ok, and probably the only around the area. Be forewarned, the parking is always difficult , but what irritates me is the 'young lady owner ''s really bad attitude, usually towards fellow women. First she will throw the menu to your table, then she takes a long time to take your order, AND, she gives you mean look if you do not order enough or if you decide to share your dishes! ( if they have a table min, then state it in the restaurant)! Unless you really crave for pho, I wouldn't even come to be tortured by this ridiculously poor customer service!

I grew up in east San Jose where you can easily find 2 or more good pho spots per plaza so I've been conditioned to expect pho to always be delicious. I didn't know bad pho existed until I tried spots outside of San Jose. Hometown Noodle actually satisfies my Pho cravings and saves me the 30 min drive to ESSJ. The broth is tasty and they give you a decent amount of meat. Note that this place is embedded in the middle of Mexican markets so it's very easy to miss. Parking is limited to a few spots in front of the stores or the side streets.

I've been coming to Hometown Noodle at least once a week for several months now, and have been a customer for a few years. The pho has been consistently really good for a very long time now, and I see other parts of the business improving as well. The staff has my and my coworkers' orders memorized and is very friendly. In my opinion, Hometown Noodle has the best tasting pho in Redwood City, and I'm pretty sure they are still priced cheaper than anywhere else for the same quantity. One negative is that on overcast or cool days, when everyone and their mother wants pho, the restaurant can get overcrowded during lunch hours.

Though a bit shabby on the surface, the food is really good. It's fresh and not oily and cheap. The service is not terrific, and it takes forever to get your food, but it's worth the wait. The take out is great; just don't believe them when they say "20 minutes." More like 50. We'll be back!

To begin, the selection of Pho restaurants in RWC is not great to begin with. Hometown noodle is on the better end, but not by much. Why the low rating? Today my family (husband, brother and two kids) and I went in for lunch. Each adult ordered a bowl of pho and I usually share why my daughter (4 year old). My other child is a newborn, so obviously she wasn't going to eat here. The waitress informs us that their policy just changed and from now on, we would need to order one item per person. So next time, even though I split a bowl with my daughter, I HAVE to order an appetizer. Say what?! I've never had this told to me at ANY pho restaurant. Especially since I'm sharing with my child and not another adult. Also, I'm not sure if there was a change of cooks or owners, but the pho did not taste good. We will not be returning.

The pho and spring is okay. If ur planning to order take out make sure you give them more time than what is said. They seem quite busy with togo and people dining in. They say it would be ready in 20 min but took 40 minutes. Services overall, is pretty good. The old lady gave me water while I waited and seem pretty friendly.

Hometown Noodle Restaurant is a sole Vietnamese restaurant among many Mexican restaurants along this stretch of Middlefield. Parking was especially difficult to find as the restaurant does not have it's own lot and consists mainly of street and residential parking. Place was empty today, but glad to see a nice selection of traditional pho, rolls, and both rice and dry vermicilli plates. We ordered the combination pho. Broth was solid and also quite hot....decent noodle amount and the condiments were solid, especially the chili oil which I added to my typical sriracha sauce. The one complaint, and it's been noted by many, is that very little meat is given with each order. The combination contains tripe, tendon, flank, and steak. We had the steak come on the side and it was a very small plate with very small pieces. The quantity of tendon and tripe was similar....you had to really go digging to find the 1 piece of each in the regular size. Overall, I thought the pho was tasty, but disappointed at the size and the quantity of meat, especially cuts like tripe and tendon which aren't that expensive. The banh mi was also more expensive than other areas at $5. Given the area, would have liked to see slightly lower prices and more bang for your buck. They accept credit cards, but not American Express.

I was thinking I was the only customer who experience the bad service there. It is busy retaurant during lunch but I went there at 11:30am and not much people. i went there for a take away. A waitress asked me to pay and then she left after I paid. I picked up the food and another waiter ask me to pay again. They don't even give me a receipt and the changes. The food is okay and I won't go back again.

Definitely my go-to place for Pho. It helps that it's 5 blocks away. The decor is a little weird and shabby in a neon IKEA of way. Once you get past that, the service is good, and the food is solid and cheap. I've stuck with the basics of Pho and coconut juice, but those are right on the money.

Wow, this restaurant is such a hidden gem!..This place is the place to go to for a great Vietnamese food beside Vietnam in Redwood City. I been to Vietnam and lived there for about 3 years. Being Vietnamese/American, I've been eating pho (Vietnamese noodle soup) since all my life! It's one of my favorites and I know good pho when I taste it, and Hometown Noodle has some delicious pho! My coworker introduced to this placed. I did not believed in Redwood City would had a such placed for PHO. Hometown Noodle had other dish too, after finish my Pho, i also share an appetizers Egg roll with me coworker it were crispy , hardly any grease or oil on it. I would surely come back again , and try other dishes. The service is like any other typical Vietnamese pho restaurant--very impersonal and straight to the point. The price we got from our order are very reasonable for the placed and location...

The vermicelli/bun looked fresh but tasted really bland and super salty at the same time. Also we got take out and ended up paying $11+ for something listed as $8.25 on the restaurant's online menu. Talk about false advertising. I highly recommend you try a different restaurant if you want satisfying Vietnamese food and fair pricing.

The best Pho in Redwood City and just as good as the best in San Jose. I always order the large chicken pho (pho ga) and its delicious every time. The neighborhood might not look too nice but the restaurant is superb. Very clean and very professional. Update: My last visit to Hometown Noodle was very bad. The older woman working their did not take my order correctly and blamed me for the mix up (although I was very clear and order the same meal since I've been going there), Her attitude and service was extremely rude and loud where most of the guests could hear what was going on. The older gentlemen that works their is always nice but needless to say I will not be back. I rated them at 5 stars but changed to 2 for poor treatment.

This place was great! Super clean and much nicer than we were expecting given the location. The food was super fresh and everything looked just like the pictures. Based on food alone, this place would get 4 stars. I did like the pho here, but I thought it was a little pricey for the portion sizes. That can probably be attributed to the Redwood City address, even though this neighborhood seemed a little iffy. My friend ordered a vermicelli dish and didn't specify the size, and the waitress didn't ask her what size she wanted, either. When we got the bill and realized we were charged extra, we asked the waitress, who told us that since we didn't say what size we wanted, we got a large bowl. Uhhh..... And then when ANOTHER friend went up to the cash register to pay the bill, she insisted to him AGAIN that since we didn't say what size we wanted, we got a large bowl. WTF? Kinda sketchy... Also, why would you bring a sore topic up again as someone is paying? I really wanted to like this place but their service, even with my lax standards, is a little lacking...

We tried this place after friends recommended it highly. We ordered our standard pho, fresh shrimp roll and grilled pork to do a taste comparison. Portions are smaller than the other place we like near the RWC train station. The food here is just so-so, bland and not so memorable. We will stick with the other restaurant.

stopped by on the way home from fremont. like others have said, located in little mexico. standard pho shop atmosphere. quick service. pho noodles were standard. at least they werent stale. broth was rich and flavorul. meat was the usual mediocre quality pre-frozen variety. side note: the owners daughter (i think) started to brush her teeth in the dining area in front of customers. there is only so much cultural gap i can handle and this crossed the line.

Better than Pho Vi Hoa in Los Altos! I used to go to Pho Vi Hoa frequently because I worked nearby. It was my go-to whenever I couldn't decide where to go. It's still good, but Hometown Noodle is better. This place is also way better than Pho Dong (on Broadway). I used to be a regular at Pho Dong, but the service has gotten bad and the food is mediocre. The food is fresh and hot and the day staff is very friendly and fast. If you go at night you might be served by a crabby older woman so be warned. It's in a Latin neighborhood, surrounded by Latin shops of all kinds, but don't let it deter you. I recommend any of the pho soups. The fried shrimp rolls are great, but don't be surprised if they take long and your meal comes before your appetizer. If you go for lunch arrive by 12:00 or you'll end up waiting for a table. Cheap food, big portions. Yummy.

A hole in the wall Vietnamese restaurant. Not the best Pho I have had, but not bad either. A decent standard. I did not like the service that much - the server (owner ?) was kind of curt and I did not feel welcome.

A friend and I were looking for a Pho place midway between us, and this came up as being in the right area, and came highly recommended. The service was friendly and quick, the food arrived swiftly, and it very good. I like Pho, and this was easily in the top 10% I've experienced.

I'm always looking for hole it the wall local spots that make delicious food. Unfortunately this one disappoints so much that I won't be back. It was a really hot day so I didn't get the pho, which could have been my biggest mistake. Instead I tried the chicken curry. It was overly sweet and clearly thickened with an abundance of cornstarch. I also typically love spring rolls but the pork ones again were too sweet and their peanut sauce too fishy. I was hungry, so I ate it, but I felt sorry about it afterwards - what a waste of calories. Once we were done we waited quite a while for our check when I finally flagged someone down we waited some more.

Love this place! I've been coming here for over 7 years with my husband and baby girl. We love their tasty Pho and shrimp/chicken spring rolls. Curry is tasty as well. It's a small family business, which are very pleasant. I've gone to many other Pho restaurants, but this tops it off and must say it's my favorite!!

my boyfriend and I used to go there like every week. They have great food and serve big portions and the owners knew us well. However, we received pho and shrimp spring rolls that had bugs in it. They simply replaced it, but it really disgusted us. The worst part is that they didn't even offer to give us at least a discount or a free entree for their mistake!!

Shabang! Thank you Yelpsters for directing me to yet another fantastic place to eat! Fast, easy, cheap and delicious! All my favorite things blended into a little Pho noodle house that rocked my lunch world today. I had the #13 (small) and the shrimp spring rolls. The spring rolls were HUGE and really fresh. They came with a tasty peanut sauce. A touch spicy, but a perfect compliment to the rolls. The small soup was anything but small. Not only did it fill me up, but I have some left over for that late afternoon snack. Can't wait for my food to settle so I can dig into the leftovers. This has become my favorite "I need to eat soup for the month of January to lose the holiday weight" place to eat. They will be seeing much of me over the coming weeks - at least until all the turkey, candy canes and red wine have left my thighs. Hoot!!!

Ordered the meatball pho - great flavor and good quality meatballs (at other places they can be very fatty and not very appetizing). My only complaint was how long it took. I ordered to go and it took about 20 mins for them to bring out my food. I know that it doesn't take much to throw a to-go order together as all the items are precooked.

Craving Pho tonight and took a chance. We ordered Spring rolls, Round Steak Pho, (#12) and BBQ Pork with Prawns over bun (#45) In addition to Thai Tea. This is seriously the BEST VIETNAMESE we have found. And we've eaten all over SF, been to Pho places in LA, and nothing compared. The thai tea was incredible, we ended up getting 2 rounds of it each. The prawns and barbecue pork had an incredible charred/ grill flavor. Spring rolls were also good. The pho we ordered in size large and quickly realized we should've gone with XL. The broth was amazing, we added Sriracha to it and it was heaven. Really interested to try the coconut curry tofu next time. When we arrived at 6, it was us and 2 other tables. within an hour almost all the tables were full. Customer service was also very pleasant. We thought it was a strange neighborhood to be getting vietnamese, but really it's a secret treasure. So unbelievably good.

I've only had one thing here -the chicken pho- and I always get it to go so I can't comment on the overall dining experience. But every time I've called in my order it's been ready in 5 minutes. The chicken is all white meat (yay!) and the broth is excellent...perfect flavor. My only complaint is they need to add a bit more chicken. The noodle-to-chicken ratio is definitely heavy on the noodle side. Maybe I should suck it up and pay more for extra chicken. Or just eat less noodles. (Right) The decor inside is your average pho joint, nothing too fancy. It's definitely a "go for the food" type of place. The neighborhood is in the Little Mexico part of Redwood City, so yeah, it's not downtown Palo Alto. I've traipsed through the Tenderloin for a good bowl of pho, though, so maybe I'm not the best barometer. ;-) If I decide to get anything else off the menu I'll update my review but if you're deadset on the pho it's delish. Just maybe ask for extra chicken...

Pretty bomb. By the time I left here, I was letting the staff know they were #1. I'm saying this after reading a few reviews on this one, and frankly most people on here complain about the service. Thought it was just fine. However, me and two other dudes were the only people dining in the entire restaurant. We ordered our own entrees. Got a large bowl of beef brisket/meat (#12 on the menu), with the meat on the side (you cook it yourself in the bowl and watch it as it browns) and shared some appetizers like amazing egg rolls (so perfectly crisp) and shrimp wraps (I didn't think they were tasteless, just fresh and lacking a really gamey seafood taste which is ok with me) and of course the peanut sauce was great, if just a little too creamy, thick and sweet, but still able to be enjoyed. As I was eating and retreating deeper into food coma, I needed energy, and a savy pho-xpert at our table said to enter in an order of ice coffees. They bring out this little kettle contraption which you allow to drain entirely of coffee beans, and then you add the liquid mixture to your ice-lined glass and make a nifty little (but by no means little in caffeine content I should assume) coffee drink able to provide that post-prandial energy boost. I was pleased with the place really. I love how fresh the food seems, the lady is mild mannered and a non-factor really. Wish I could have brought home that pho noodle/broth gallon I had left but it would have been too embarassing. Nobody seems to do that. Man.

The food here is very, very good, especially the pho, but I will not give it the stars it deserves because of the terribly rude service. I can understand being overlooked because the servers are busy (they do a huge business at lunch), but I cannot tolerate nasty, snotty treatment when it is not called for. I haven't been so badly undervalued and ignored since Cha Ca La Vong in Hanoi, which is notorious for its surly service! This place may even top that one. Don't go expecting a smooth experience, but you will get some good food. There were many appealing items on the menu, and I would like to try some more of them, but it will take a while for me to get up my nerve before I can return here. it isn't often I feel so insignificant and undervalued as I was here!

Me and my family have been coming to Hometown Noodle for 9 years and we have never been disappointed. The pho is delicious and it is what I usually get every time I go. They give you parsley, lemon, sprouts and jalapeno peppers to put into the soup to your liking. The chow mein and combination fried rice is also my favorite. You won't be disappointed when you come here!

Went to Hometown Noodle today for lunch with a coworker. From the outside it looks sketchy, but the inside is nice, clean and put together. We were seated and served promptly, but as the end of our lunch neared, it did get more crowded (around noon), so I suggest going on the earlier side. Both of us ordered the small chicken pho, which was yummy and only $8 each for the small, which still was plenty big. Thus, I highly recommend and will be going again!

My favorite pho place. Quick, delicious, and easy. Small #12 and a #5 grilled pork spring roll plate make an amazing dinner for relatively cheap pricetag. I've been coming here for 3 years now and I have yet to be disappointed. The recent redecoration is nice as well...

I was super excited to finally find a Vietnamese restaurant with a BBQ chicken + rice dish that was delicious. SUPER happy - the flavoring is so good! It also comes with a fried egg roll that was pretty decent. The pho was also pretty good. They have Vietnamese sandwiches as well, but you have to get them to-go. The sandwich was pretty decent but not mind-blowing -- it tasted fine but needed some "oomph."

So this is the second time I try Pho. The first time my hubby took me to a place in Sunnyvale which I wasn't to fond of. This time I actually ate it and it was so good. I got so full half way thru the SMALL bowl. I will Def. go back :) Thanks to my girls who are regulars. They made me come out of my comfort zone.

Best pho in Redwood City. I keep coming back. I'm in a pho only phase, but they have lots of tasty things on the menu. The meat is very good quality, and the portions are generous. They have redone the interior, but you wouldn't know I from the outside. I don't really come for the decor, but the atmosphere is relaxed. Some Vietnamese places, in San Jose for example, have nothing just the bare bones. I'll be back next week to get some more pho, or maybe go to San Mateo. It's a little further. It's a tough call because Hometown is at the top of the list, and convieniently located.

Delicious Ph, got my bowl in less than 5 mins. Very big portion for even a small size. Also loved the spring rolls. Services was suprisingly very pleasant for Vietnamese Ph restaurant. I have been coming back twice every week now. Will try their Ph Đuôi Bò next time.

Highly disappointing! The food was 5 stars, but their food and stock is now 1 star! I come here every week. They are very rude, especially the old lady. She talks to you like you are doing her a favor ordering her food. She is the mom of Jenny, the young Vietnamese girl that is the owner. I went in with my friend on a busy day, I was waiting for them to sit us, Jenny saw me and said "we don't have time", in a thick broken Vietnamese accent. That's no way to talk to a customer who goes there every week! They all need to learn a lesson in how to talk to customers. I don't know if she views Mexican customers as less?? I ordered yesterday the combination noodle soup, they are tricky because they are greedy. They want money only! They only have one size to go in noodle soup. On the phone she asked what size I want, why are you asking that if there is only one size? Just to increase price for same size. I payed the same amount of money for my noodle soup. When I picked it up they charged me regular noodle soup price service charge for using my card. Then she told me they had no Basil! Are you serious??!!! This is the second time!!! In two weeks. She said the delivery did not come in. She didn't want to lower price for food even though they didn't have all the ingredients!! They need to smile more and be happy. They look miserable, and they are working with the public.

Hometown Noodle is an average pho spot nestled between Mexican shops in Redwood City, pretty much the closest to authentic you'll get for miles. * BBQ PORK SHRIMP BUN - 3.5 STARS The BBQ pork is thin and not very good quality, and the 3 shrimp taste like they were frozen. 3.5 stars because it was a good combo with the shredded lettuce and copious amounts of fish sauce. * CHICKEN PHO - 3 STARS The broth is very salty but it comes with a decent amount of shredded white meat. * SUMMER ROLLS - 2.5 STARS Not my favorite. Next time I'll have to try some things that are unique to Hometown like the oxtail Pho!

At first taste, I was hooked! I thought the broth was delicious and the enjoyed my bowl of pho. However, the one star rating is for what to come. My friend ordered the vegetarian banh mi to go and when it was placed on our table, she opened the packaging to see a COSTCO hotdog bun with tofu in it (for nearly $5!!). Are you serious folks? I've had a lot of banh mi (from US to AUS) but never have I seen them use the hotdog bun from Costco (those buns are only good with the polish sausages!). On top of that, I was extremely thirsty after I had the pho. I'm pretty sure there's a good amount of MSG in the broth. Don't think we'll go back here. Pho had too much MSG and the costco hotdog banh mi just aren't worth the time or money.

We've tried every Vietnamese place in Redwood City, but this is clearly the best one. Don't be scared by the exterior, as this place looks pretty bad from the outside. Once you step in, it's very appealing for a pho place. The service is friendly and attentive. It's great for lunch if you're working, because you can be in and out in under 30. They hop at lunch so make sure you time things right. The pho is tasty, the broth is flavorful, and the ingredients seem fresh. I'm more a fan of grilled pork, which they offer as a rice plate, a vermicelli bowl, or just straight up with no fixin's, which I really enjoy. Highly recommended! Come and taste!

This looks ghetto on the outside but the sweet tiny old asian man inside who I assume runs and owns it is super nice. Adorable. Lots of menu options here, but I stuck with traditional items. - Medium pho ga (chicken) with white meat $8.95 + $2 for the extra meat I ordered was so worth it. Fresh bean sprouts, each person got their own plate. - TIP: try the grilled chicken spring roll, surprisingly tasty - particularly with the hoisin sauce. $6.50. Super tasty grilled chicken, I could eat a ton of these all day everyday!!! Ordering options: - To-go, but it's better to sit down if you can find parking. - Door dash now offers delivery of hometown :) Don't forget their tasty chicken spring rolls, seriously haven't been able to find them at many other Viet restaurants!

I'm a fan--this place was tasty. The servers are good at running the show here so it moves. I usually get Bun at my local Vietnamese place, but they had Banh Hoi so I tried that. It was tasty but didn't seem so different from Bun, although more expensive. I think the main difference is the broad lettuce leaves you can use to make rolls, if you're into that. I'd come here again if I were in the area, and get the Bun. Parking was a little tricky on a Wednesday at noon. There is street angled parking but it fills up, and the side street parking is really full. In retrospect I thought I was just lucky to find a spot a block away, but it's possible that a little further down the parking opens up even more; I'm not sure. On a random side note, as I was pulling out of my spot, a lady next to me who had just arrived and had opened her door shot me a dirty look and mouthed "ass hole." Of course I blew her a kiss in return; I mean what are you going to do, right?

We love this place. Been coming here on and off for 10yrs. Our son was still a baby. They remember him. It's tasty and affordable. Love the ice coffee, coconut water, pho, beef rolls, and stir fried noodles. Check'm out. Lunch time's a bit busy, but that can't be helped. Locals on break like't there.

I ordered food and asked for no peanuts because I'm allergic. The owner lady said no problem. Then once I made it back to my quarters I find peanuts on my food. So I called and ask them to fire up a new one for me. She said they are closing and to come back tomorrow. Bad service! Chicken and Shrimp chow mien means no chicken and 2 shrimp?

Was looking for a good Pho place close to Menlo Park, CA, and read the recommendations on Yelp about Hometown Noodle in Redwood City. Made the short 10 minute drive and was happy I did. What makes a good Pho is the broth. I thought the broth was tasty and flavorful. The rare steak was tender and cooked to perfection in the broth. Décor is nothing fancy, as most authentic places are not, but the staff was attentive and friendly and prices reasonable. I love me some Vietnamese, so I'll defiantly be back!

Yelp, you've disappointed me!! I was in the mood for Vietnamese food near by summer job (Palo Alto) and was pleased to find this place had a 4 star Yelp average. That is pretty good for a Vietnamese place (most of them average 3 stars are less), so I decided to give it a shot. Parking is a bit of a hassle. If you can't find anything in the front, you have to start driving around the neighborhoods, and that was a bit hard too. If you do find parking in the front, backing out onto the main road (Middlefield) is a bit terrifying. It is definitely a hole in the wall place, so I automatically thought, oh yeahhhhh, this has got to be good! When I walked in, I was immediately seated and I ordered right away. Being on this annoying low starch diet as prescribed by my doctor, I ordered the vermicelli bowl with pork sans vermicelli, but with extra veggies. When it came out, I was so disappointed. I'm used to hole in the wall Vietnamese places to have heaping servings. This was in a small bowl, not even filled to the brim. When I looked beyond the meat (which was tough and lacking flavor), there was barely any veggies! On top of that, the tiny little bowl was $8.75! I know it's not expensive, but for what I got, I should have paid much less. When I went to go pay, I was charged an extra 50 cents for using my card (fee for any card purchases less than $15). The lady behind the counter was busy texting on her phone and could have cared less as to whether not I had a good dinner. I also felt bad for her one employee in the front. He was running around trying to make all the customers happy while she was just sitting there. The two stars are for him being so efficient and for helping so much. Otherwise, this would have gotten 1 star. Never again.

Clean nice modern deco pho place. Fast service. Great value pho and fresh rice rolls. It is the only pho place I know of that offers small medium and large size pho options. The medium is ample! I thought the prices were fair and comparable to other establishments in Redwood City. Try to park close if you are eating here at night. We enjoyed our lunch here. We will be back because they are open Sundays.

The most amazing place for pho!!! I've tried pho at a couple different restaurants and nothing compares. Delicious and I MEAN delicious flavor and generous portions. The spring rolls are fresh and healthy. I've introduced my friends to this place and they have all loved it. The place may seem sketch from the outside and bc of the area, but it's actually pretty fancy/clean on the inside. The great customer service is just a plus. Honestly even if they had horrible customer service, I would still eat there.

Picked up some pho for lunch. Probably one of my favorite spots to order out from. Their staff is friendly and some of the best pho I've had in Redwood City. The only issue that I have with this place is parking. There is only street parking and if you go at a time when it's busy you won't find any. I had to part a few blocks away. Totally worth the walk though! If you are looking for a pho place, the Pho you waiting for! Check this place out!

My new go-to Pho spot! Moved to San Carlos recently and was sad to find out there wasn't any decent pho around! This place in RWC isn't too far and although the parking situation is HORRIBLE I really enjoy eating here. The pho is great! Deep in flavor, perfectly salty and just puts a smile on my face. I have to say the service here really sucks and has gotten increasingly worse with each visit and they are very understaffed but I guess the vietnamese are notorious for bad service. The food makes up for what the service lacks so I can't complain too much. The imperial rolls are another great item here. Ive tried the fried roll with shrimp in it as well but it wasn't as good. The fresh spring rolls were also very enjoyable, I always try the peanut sauce first on its own, one of the worse things is where the peanut sauce tastes like strait jiffy or skippy or whatever that god awful peanut butter is. Anywho great peanut sauce. Their rice plates with the grilled chicken/pork is also very flavorful and a great pick here. Come try it out.

  • Sherry L.

Pretty packed on a Friday for lunch. Service was quick and the food is pretty good. I liked the imperial rolls. But the shrimp chow mein was so so. I thought it was going to be a dry stir fry and less salty. Portion size was good though. I think the pho and bun looked better.

  • Ro M. L.

I wouldn't rate this restaurant less than 5 stars, but maybe because I'm not pretentious about my pho and other rice or noodle dishes. The service is fast, the staff is nice and polite, and I love their vietnamese ice coffee. I love their grilled chicken spring rolls, seafood pho, and their grilled prawns and chicken bun dish. I also enjoyed their curry and fried rice. Added to the quick service and good food, are the low and reasonable prices. I don't eat pork or beef so I can't rate those dishes, however. Also, some of these one stars are by people who didn't eat the food. Sorry that your customer service experience was bad, but for rating a restaurant solely on Restaurant.com's coupon not being honored, get out of here.

Great food but they are always soo rude . no customer service skills at all. I guess if you dont mind really horrible customer service and great food then its ok. I wish they would teach there employees professionalism in the work enviroment. For example i asked for my drink to go and she basically just threw me the plastic cup.

I couldn't find another place in redwood city to eat chicken spring rolls so I decided to five this place a second chance. The service has improved they now have someone else working with the old lady and the service is way better than before. The spring rolls were delicious everything tastes fresh in the spring rolls. I also tried a chicken noodle soup and it wasn't that good needs more flavor too much noodles and it makes the soup a little too dry. I'll be back to try different plates! :-)

Love this place -- certainly better than other area Pho places, broth is super flavorful, they don't skimp on the meat. Their non-pho offerings are very good as well, I especially enjoy their BBQ pork and great egg rolls. I've always had excellent and friendly service. Our go-to for Vietnamese.

Food is hands down amazing. fresh and fast service too. the lady is a little surely. I like her. I ordered a coco-nut water and it was disgusting, too syrupy. She took it off my bill with a grunt, understandably. The bah mee sammi is all bread. Stick with the pho and fresh viet plates. Super fresh produce, and the condiments are always stocked.

  • Clarissa L.

My friend and I ordered the pho (which was REALLY flavorful and good) and the banh hoi with shrimp and pork. They gave us only a few pieces of shrimp, and I actually preferred the pork so I'd recommend going with just the pork next time. But both dishes were so addictive and delicious! I really liked how the pork was marinated. The place isn't that big so I don't know if large groups'd fit there. But I really like this place and would be back :) Banh Hoi!! :)

Finally went to Hometown after reading how people loved it so much, oddly, in the reviews for Pho Dong. I had the Bun with grilled chicken, and it was amazing. Very generous portions, with a very tasty glaze on the grilled chicken. Tons of sprouts, and various pepper sauces on the table..And so affordable!! $10 for a HUGE bowl of the Bun and a drink. Can not wait to go back and try the Pho!!

I really like my neighborhood, but we have about 18 Mexican restaurants, many of them excellent, but it is nice to have another option. Hometown Noodle is the only other option in my hood, and it is a great option to have. I love me some Tai Chin noodle soup (#13 Round Steak and Brisket) when it's cold outside or if I feel a cold coming on. Is it the Jewish chicken soup of the Vietnamese? Yes! When it is too warm for a hot bowl of noodle soup I get the cold rice vermicelli noodles known as Bun. I like the Bun Thit Nuong (#41) with pork. Yum!

  • Olivia L.

This place is a solid 3 stars. The pho is ok: the broth is less tasty than some (a bit watery to be honest) but the siracha is full-strength (a rarity). The small size is big enough for a hungry me (I eat like a guy who is not on a diet!), but I wouldn't go so far as to sing their praises -- I only come here because it's the closest pho to my house.

  • Andrew W.

I know a lot of people love the pho at Hometown Noodle. I honestly think that it is middle of the road. The broth is flavorful, but I like it to have more tang. It is not bad, but I think the broth needs to have more aromatics in it (ginger, onion...). Still, I think the flavor is quite authentic despite my remarks. I think the toppings are quite good quality and quite fresh. But, I expect no less from any restaurant I go to. But, the real gem at Hometown is the appetizer. The special hometown egg rolls are one of the most addictive substances on Earth. I can seriously eat them to the point of sickness. They are indescribably good. Salty, sweet, porky, crispy. That description does not do it justice. In addition to the food being great, the price is very cheap. You can get pho for cheaper, but the quality may be lower. Hometown is about as cheap as you can get for its level of quality. The place is a little run down and looks like it needs a make over. The plastic tablecloths are a little off-putting. But, the place is fairly clean and the service is very friendly. Come here if you want good, cheap Vietnamese food and don't forget to order the appetizer.

I purchased a Restaurant.com certificate for this restaurant. No where on the certificate does it say it cannot be used on weekends. Anyways after we got there, they said sorry the certificate is good for weekdays only. The waitress was very very rude and that tone she had was the most disrespectful.Anyways, another table next to us who just finished dinner tried to use their certificate and she rudely threw the certificate back on the table saying they can't use it. She was so rude that those customers paid and said they'll never come back again. The story doesn't end there; on yet another table that just sat down (right after us) who presented the certificate, they were given the same rude answer. It was an amazing sight. Most of the tables were there because of Restaurant.com certificates and were rudely rejected. We got up and left. I will call Restaurant.com to get my money back. And I will do everything within my powers to tell my friends and associates to NOT visit this establishment.

My girlfriend and I go here at least once a week. It's affordable (about $6 for a large bowl of pho), easy access (usually street parking right in front of the store), and fast (if needed we can get in and out in 1/2 an hour). It also has that dynamic, family-owned atmosphere that's tough to find on the Peninsula. I definitely recommend trying the Hometown egg rolls; instead of fried dough around the stuffing, they use some unique egg noodle matrix that's nice and crispy.

Beef rolls with lettuce and rice paddy wraps are the BOMB! The flavor of Lemon Grass Chicken was perfectly balanced without being too spicy or being overpowered by fish sauce. The Shaking Beef was also excellent The Grilled Pork Spring Rolls combines savory grilled texture of grill meats with freshness of cold noodles, lettuce and fresh veggies. And or course, the Beef, chicken and seafood Pho were all delicious and yummy. Only complaint is that they don't give that much meat in the Beef Pho and the Spicy Eggplant was highly disappointing. Overall, Hometown serves up delicious, down-home and savory food at very inexpensive prices. Highly recommended.

Only Pho place in the Menlo Park area. Other closest ones are Mountain View and Redwood City. Neighborhood may not be appealing, but Pho is good and comparably priced to other restaurants in the area.

This has been one of the worst dining experiences of my life. I also used a restaurant.com coupon and was told to show it before ordering. Immediately after showing the coupon, a lady comes out to rudely tell us that she can no longer accept it. Okay. I understand if you are angry with restaurant.com or whatever deal you have with them, but if you actually want customers to come back you should never take it out on them. She practically chastised us for buying the coupons and even had the nerve to storm angrily away. She promptly returned to tell us that the coupon had already been validated and even ACCUSED my mother of making multiple copies and taking advantage of the deal. WOW Not only was she rude and disrespectful, she also falsely accused my mother of theft and fraud. Needless to say, we are never coming back here again. Also, because they knew we were using a restaurant.com coupon she even admitted that they gave less food to us. Not only was there less (about 9 prawns for $11??), but the pho was cold. There are better places to spend my hard earned money.

I really like this restaurant. The lady who runs it is very friendly. It is nothing fancy, just good food at a good price. It can be very crowded for lunch, so get there early.

Thank you yelpers! YUM the pho broth here is really delicious. I'm a big pho fan and I've tasted many different types. Agreed, the meat portions could be larger. Also, do order #1 on the menu. It's the Hometown Special Eggrolls, also known as "cha gio re" in Vietnamese. It's the smaller egg rolls with rice vermicelli (?) vs. rice paper wrap. The texture is crispier, breaks into smaller pieces in your mouth. It has taro in it... so delicious. Very few places sell these eggrolls/cha gio re so I'm so happy I've found it here! Note that they are small and you'll 7 of them for about $5 I think. The spring rolls -- the fresh ones with the rice paper wrap-- aren't as good here as I've had them before. The peanut sauce didn't really do it for me. It was mixed with chili sauce (not sriracha) which I should have asked not to be done. The shaking beef is good - filet mignon diced up and cooked in garlic and lemongrass (I think that's what I tasted). about $7.50 The restaurant is in a semi-sketchy part of RWC but there's plenty of parking and it's in a commercial block so it's not that bad. Parking avail in front and i think in back too.

it's hard to find this place even if you are actively looking for it. i had to drive around twice. it's true it's in a random location the pho is decent. good broth. i've had it as take out and i think they do a pretty good job of packing it all separately so that you can combine them later. the noodles get stuck together but i guess that happens if you are eating it later. very soothing though on a cold day or when you're sick. shrimp spring rolls are ok - i wish they would cut them into smaller pieces so that they are not these huge limp logs the banh mi sandwich is only available at lunch - it's not the best i've had but they put a lot of meat ( i got the bbq pork) so for $5 i think it's worth it.

I was beginning to lose hope that I couldn't find any decent pho around me. I've been spoiled by the likes of Sacramento, San Jose, and Little Saigon. This little shop could easily be missed driving down the street. Came in with co-workers and found there to be a short wait, as the place couldn't hold more than 40 it looked like. Service was decent for how busy it was. Whatever conversation our table had came to a halt and silence once the food was out. Savory broth and still very hot. Only gripes were that they don't serve limes (yes i know lemons are cheaper and this economy sucks, but I'd honestly pay extra for limes), the meat portions are somewhat skimpy, and beef balls are extra charge. Usually a house special combo includes meat balls but oh well. I shall return regardless..

Terrible Imperial Rolls, greasy and lacking fresh ingredients.....only some mushy filling. Ask for extra veggies in Pho, no bok choy, got regular cabbage. No spearmint or cilantro for Pho, no tai basil, just regular. But very clean and friendly.

  • Rukawa J.

whoa! 4 stars Yelp rating on Pho in Redwood City?!?! I went and i was disappointed. Their Pho tasted so so, ordered XL bowl of pho, only the bowl was bigger than usual but the content were the same as regular size. Basically I paid extra just to have a bigger bowl to serve me. I guess in RWC, there aren't that many Pho competitions, thats why it has 4 stars rating.. WAY OVER RATED!!!!

I've eaten at this establishment 3 times now, all several months apart from each other, and I must say that I always walk away satisfied. I've found Vietnamese food to be a tasty treat when the craving strikes, but finding a reliable "go-to" restaurant has been hit-or-miss. Hometown Noodle just might be that place... For starters, the Special Hometown Wraps Egg Rolls are ridiculously good. Both the vegetarian and shrimp spring rolls are as solid as you would expect, with flavorful peanut dipping sauce. The pho is good - not out of this world - but good. My feelings about pho are that the flavor can be changed so much from bowl to bowl by the items *I* add (i.e., basil, lime juice, jalapenos, hoisin sauce, etc.) that it's tough to truly give it a "grade." The real hidden gem on the menu at Hometown Noodle, I believe, is the #41 - Vermicelli Noodles with your choice of Grilled Pork, Beef, or Chicken. Do yourself a favor - forget the beef and the chicken, because the grilled pork is INSANE! One of the members in our party mentioned that they also now offer sandwiches to-go, which he said were excellent. Next time I'm up that way, I'm definitely trying one.

  • Abha R.

This is a vegetarian review. One rainy evening hot soup felt like the best thing to have, so we headed to Hometown Noodle. We ordered vegetarian spring rolls (served with a peanut sauce and a healthy amount of cilantro), vegetarian pho with tofu, tofu coconut curry, and two Thai iced teas. The spring rolls were quite delicious, the pho was filling and warming (exactly what we were looking for) and the iced teas were large and tasty. The coconut curry was nothing special; it sort of tasted as though it had come out of a Trader Joe's jar . Service was attentive although we had some difficulty communicating with our hostess about our vegetarian needs. The exterior and interior were nondescript. The place was unnervingly quiet and we found ourselves talking in whispers (just like the other couples in there too). The fact that there was just one vegetarian pho was a bit of a disappointment, so it is unlikely that we will return.

  • Catherine C.

This is just a review for their grilled pork vermicelli with spring rolls. The fish sauce was a-ok. The grilled pork tasted a bit more like Chinese BBQ pork instead of the standard Vietnamese grilled pork. The spring rolls were standard and fried to order. Servings are skewed to the smaller side for Vietnamese food, but I was still full upon finishing my meal. My only complaint is that the noodles were al dente (aka still kinda hard) ............which is definitely NOT a good adjective for describing vietnamese vermicelli.

I don't often write reviews on Yelp; only if I find something really great or really bad. Unfortunately I had a horrible customer experience here today at lunch. I've been numerous times to this restaurant and enjoy the food. When restaurant.com had a gift certificate for them I jumped on the deal. Today when I brought it in I was told (after spending over $40) that they wouldn't honor it because we didn't present it at the beginning of our meal (we did a few times) and that they don't accept them on weekends (that wasn't specified on the certificate). I'm sad to say that Hometown Noodle will not be getting my business anymore. Anyone have a good Vietnamese recommendation on the peninsula?

    (1)
  • Ms E.

No reason to go here unless the location is convenient, but it's respectable food. Compared to other pho places on the peninsula, I'd say the soup and imperial rolls are better than average. But the way the meat is seasoned and prepared for the noodle bowls or rice plates is not really doing Vietnamese food justice. Despite that, based on its food merits, Hometown Noodle is still worth traveling to over Pho Dong. It's painted bright, parrot green so it's easy to spot amongst other businesses on the strip. No problems getting a parking spot in the area, but Middlefield Road or dealing with the side streets makes the parking situation kind of a pain to maneuver. And unfortunately, they're closed on Sunday.

I've been here quite a few times since my first visit, and the experience has been pretty good each time. The only downside is the small eating area, which means you have to get there early for lunch, or risk waiting around outside. One giant plus is the ability to pay separately with cards.... that makes work lunches a snap. The food has been consistently quite good, and it keeps me and my work friends coming back.

  • Tommy N.

I am very picky about my food. If I like something? I can eat it a thousand times!! Hometown noodle has the best Pho around the area. I work nearby so I eat here frequently. Great food to keep me going for the day!!

  • Yunmi B.

Best Pho in the Peninsula- hands down. I also LOVE the crispy imperial rolls served with lettuce, pickled radish/carrot and cilantro. Wrap that baby up and you're good to go! Also, the cold vermincelli noodles served with prawns, egg rolls and fish sauce is also delicious. I love supporting local restaurants and especially because the ladies who own the restaurant are all so sweet.

Best Pho I've ever had. The rest of the menu is awesome too! Curry, lemongrass, hometown special egg rolls are all a must!!!! The broth in the soup is sooo fresh, and it does not taste bland or fishy at all, just yummy!

Hometown Noodle is a delightful surprise, especially since it's in a pretty random area in Redwood City. I've liked all the dishes I have tried so far, especially the seafood egg noodle soup. The egg rolls are very delicious and the type of wrapper they use is pretty rare to find in most Vietnamese restaurants. It gets busy around lunch-get there before noon. They also take reservations if you have a party of at least five people.

  • Annie C.

I only tried the Noodle Salad Bowl with eggrolls. I grew up in Sacramento so I had a better Noodle Salad Bowl. I think the noodles were boiled too long because they were in short pieces. I was still feeling hungry after I finished my Noodle Salad Bowl so I went to Costco and got a Chicken Bake. My husband liked the broth for his pho but felt there wasn't enough meat. I don't think I will go back there eventhough I liked the service. I'm still trying to look for a good Vietnamese Restaurant close to Redwood City so we dont have to drive down to San Jose or driving 20 minutes just to get some decent Vietnamese food.

  • Melissa S.

Love this place, great pho, bahn, you'll find me here at least once a week on my lunch break. Best chicken pho anywhere, and friendly efficient service for the most part. BTW, don't park behind the shoe place. That A hole will tow your ass and end up costing you $400, and for that matter, don't shop there either!

  • Ashlie J.

Best veggie pho soup in town! My husband and I love this place because the food is fresh and homemade with love and care. I have tried many different Vietnamese Pho restaurants and this place by far is the best with the tastiest ingredients. My husband always gets the beef pho soup and he loves it every time. I highly recommend the pho veggie soup!

  • Gloria J.

Awesome! This is your classic hole in the wall kind of place. It only has seating for a handful of people but the pho is amazing. Very flavorful, lots of great options! And the service is quick. Plus the serving sizes are enormous and the prices are affordable. Highly recommended!

This is my go-to retreat for pho in the Redwood City/Menlo Park area. The large special pho is a decent size with all the fixings. The broth is legit & hearty! Deep-fried egg-rolls are tasty too.

  • Army C.

Had the Pho here a few times and have never been disappointed. What's better is it adds a little dimension to all of the overbearing Mexican restaurants everywhere along Middlefield & 5th ave. I'm Mexican so I know when it's too much, even for Redwood City. Anywho, the Thai iced tea will get you going if the soup serves up a little bit of a food coma. Both good to the last drop. Shrimp spring rolls are a must as an appetizer!

  • a e.

My family and I come to this place regularly because they are a) good value and b) have fairly good Vietnamese food (considering it's in little mexico). The only reason I don't give them a higher rating is becuase the service can be improved. The younger woman with long hair seems like she is annoyed with customers and can be short to the other staff. Her attitude can ruin the entire dining experience... On the other hand, the older woman and latino staff are very friendly.

Me and the BF went here last night when a Pho craving hit. We've passed this place many times on the way to work, and never would've given it a 2nd glance if not for Yelp. We've been looking for a good, affordable Vietnamese place in the area, and now we've found it! I got the small #12 Pho Tai for $5.25. The size was big enough for me, the meat adequate, and the broth piping hot & good flavor. The BF got the #21 Chicken/pork broth, with prawns & thinly sliced BBQ pork ($7.25). The broth was also really flavorful, with good tones of fish sauce, and distinctive from the Pho. I recall him getting a few big Prawns and a good amount of pork. The service was pretty good, compared to other vietnamese places where you rarely get a smile. The older asian lady was friendly & attentive with getting our order, and serving. We will be back!

Decent food, friendly and efficient service. Where oh where is good Vietnamese food around here? This is the third place I've tried on the Peninsula and it rates about average for me. Maybe I'm too spoiled, being from Orange County down in Southern California. I didn't appreciate it enough when I lived down there - I didn't know I had it so good - there was tasty Vietnamese food everywhere and cheap too. Hometown isn't bad. I had the vermicelli with BBQ pork. Portion was good, veggies were fresh, pork tasted OK, but it clearly didn't have that delicious char-grilled taste that the real deal should have. Sauce for the noodles was watered down and too light. Bring on the fish sauce flavor, don't be timid; I'm Asian and can handle the stinky stuff. Spring rolls - crispy, but the flavor was lacking. Dipping sauce that is served with the spring rolls is Americanized, like a Chinese sweet and sour sauce. The people who work there were very nice and I think appreciated having one of their peeps eating there. If only the flavor was up to snuff.

3.5 random location nestled among the taco shops. for the area, it's decently good. had cha gio and small combination pho. notably the pho broth was tasty/fragrant with additives and definitely better than the place on woodside. the noodles were lacking though, and could use more meat. the cha gio were made fresh/fried then with nice pickled veggies and lettuce, but the fish sauce was weak.

Love this place. I live in the neighborhood and am so glad to have Vietnamese food around here. I bring out of town guests and friends here because it looks so seriously sketchy on the outside but inside it is so clean, cute and modern AND the food is great. It is a little gem. This is one of Little Mexico's best restaurants - right out of Little Hanoi.

FREEEESSSH! Finally a place that has REAL meat and not scary grizzle. This place is cleaner that the dental offices I work in . . . okay well almost. I usually expect smaller "hole in the wall" places to have substandard hygiene but I was really happy. All my veggies were clean and fresh, chicken was breast meat, and the servings were on the larger side. My husband who grew up eating Vietnamese food agreed it's the best on the peninsula. I just hope it does not get all crowded. Staff was really nice.

This place has been here forever and I never gave it a chance until 5 months ago??? I can't count with one hand the times I've been here. The food is very good, fresh, quick and price is perfect. I will continue going here for lunch or diner.

  • Arnold W.

Great noodle shop, sincere pho with fast friendly service. $5.75 for small bowls, $6,95 for large, best dinner dishes (filet mignon) for $10.95. Flavorful soups with fresh ingredients and super fresh veggies. Also, rice dishes and sides (egg rolls, etc). Not a fancy place, but very good and friendly. 3 good Vietnam beers, $3.50. From El Camino turn on 5th to Middlefield, then left. 11-8:30 except Sunday. Bright noodle shop/diner ambience. Wine? The menu says Chablis/Burgundy. Try the Vietnam beers. This is a working class neighborhood with several Michoacan places nearby--you may want to leave any snooties on University Ave in Palo Alto) (I'm baffled that anyone could complain about their prices! Stick to package ramen?)

Pho was blah and boyfriends BBQ cat was below average. Kudos for being the only Asian spot in Little Tijuana.

  • James K.

I work in the Land of Pho (Sunnyvale), but near home, there's not much to choose from. I drive through Little Michoacan all the time, but hadn't really noticed this place til I saw it on Yelp (although in hindsight I remember coming here about 15 years ago when it was "Thanh's"). Anyhow, one day in desperation we decided to try out Hometown Noodle, and it was OK. Not great, not terrible. Agree with reviewer who noted XL size just seemed like a bigger bowl & maybe more broth, but no extra meat or noodles. Worried me a little bit that one of the waitresses had the sneezies (go home if you're sick, jeez!). I guess I'd come back if I needed to have pho if I'm ever at home and can't be bothered to drive more than 5 minutes, otherwise there are probably better options further north... and there's always Sunnyvale.

So I sat here today after having enjoyed yet another delicious bowl of Hometown pho and thought to myself "wow, I've been going here WEEKLY for a year now, sometimes twice a week. Happy Phoday to me". I figured it was about time I wrote a review. Let's start with frequency - not since Firestone Grill in SLO (oh the college years) have I frequented a restaurant weekly. Off the bat, I think that deserves 5 stars. I come weekly because I always know what I'm going to get, and I always know that it is going to be fresh, satisfying and delicious. Always. The pho is HANDS DOWN the most flavorful broth anywhere in the area. I don't know about people saying the meat and noodle quantities are off...I've never left there hungry. I recommend the large #13 (round steak and brisket) - if you're in doubt about quantity, the 0.75 difference between small and large is a safe bet. The fresh spring rolls are always a hit, and I could literally swim in their peanut sauce I love it so much. If you're looking for something unique, definitely try the Hometown Special Wrap Egg Rolls...yeah, they're fried but they are crunchy bites of crack. Not in the mood for pho? The cold vermicelli (Bun) with sauteed beef is fantastic (#42), as well as the rice and pork dish (#78). Definitely splurge and get the egg on there. Satisfying and will not let you down. Service during lunch rush can be spotty at best, but in all fairness, they often get absolutely slammed. Jenny did herself a great favor by hiring a few more staff and really helping the flow in here. On a cold, rainy, wintery day, get there before 12 or after 1. Already can't wait until next week...

Thank you Yelpsters! I was really hungry and I thought maybe it's so good because I'm so damn hungry, or this is some of the best Pho I may have ever had. It was definitely the latter. The broth was perfect, I had the number 13 large. I can only imagine that the extra large would be for two people. She told me I could do a 1/2 order on the appetizer since I was dining alone. I had the number 2 it was good as well. I love the neighborhood it's in as well. Maybe not to late at night though. Odd I was traveling from one customer stop to another and saw the yelp reviews and when I walked in. I was the only one there. That made me nervous, I thought maybe it changed owners or something. I was just a freak occurrence. The staff was Aw-some to. ( I'll be back)

J and I shared a bowl of combo pho and a bun. The place was completely deserted when we stopped by on a Friday night. The busboy looked shocked when we walked in. Despite being the only ones inside, service was still a little slow... but at least we knew that things were being prepared "fresh." The flavor of the pho was fine, but as people have noted before, there is not a whole lot of meat in the bowl. The bun was also nothing special... except that it was J's first time trying it. While I commend them for setting up shop in a predominantly Latino community (they ARE in little Mexico after all), they are getting a 2 star rating because it accurately describes my feelings after the meal: "Meh. I've experienced better." I'd rather drive the ~10min south to Pho Vi Hoa.

So I went there for lunch today. I been wanting to try this place for a long time, since I grew tired of Pho Dong. I ordered the #1 Special Hometown Eggrolls - I was a bit surprised since I was unaware of how they would be wrapped. They were wrapped in a rice noodle wrap which was diiferent then the usual wrap. They were lighter. Apart from this difference I wasn't a big fan of the flavor. I probably should have ordered the imperial rolls instead. I then had the Steak Pho. I specifically asked for two noodles mixed in; the rice and the egg noodles. They only gave me egg noodles (which I overlooked - not a big deal). When I used to go to Pho Dong I would have both types in the same soup. I like to mix both to get different textures. The egg noodles stuck together they weren't loose. As for the flavor of the broth, I thought it was very good. The meat was tender. As for the service, I felt they were understaffed for a Saturday. They should've had one more person on staff to help tend the customers. I added a bit too much hot sauce to my soup and was nervously waiting for them to come around and give me more water but they seemed busy in the back with orders and billing. For a small place it was packed. There was a party of at least 6 people, a family of four, and at least a couple of parties of 3. Almost 20 customers when I got there. They definitely needed a few more on staff to give prompt service. I polished my meal off with a Beer 33 and a VN coffee which were great! Would I go back? Definitely. But I would try a different dish like a rice dish and some imperial rolls. As for the hood it's in. It is like little Mexico.....lol. I have never seen so many taquerias (which almost made me go for some mexican grub...instead. There has got to be some great mexican food there....I gotta Yelp the area....lol!) And there were also a lot of Spanish speaking businesses in the area. Anyway, if you haven't tried it, give it a whirl!

Location is so so at best. I don't feel like they get a lot of foot traffic. Yet, anytime I go here for lunch over the last 8 years, the place is packed. I used to work near here, and now I go out of my way to find it again. Food is yum and consistent. Jenny and her mom are gracious hosts. The place used to be a dive, but they have added nice touches to it and now it feels cozy, warm, and alive. I Highly Recommend.

I was looking for Pho in the Palo Alto area, but Yelp seemed to have very little Pho restaurants, and this listed as one of the top ones in the area so my friend and i decided to go out of our way to try it out. It was in a sketchy area, but i understand that some of the best restaurants sometimes are. Waitress greeted us upon arrival. My friend and i only wanted to share a small bowl and when we ordered just that, she seemed to be confused or upset that we only ordered the one bowl. Pho was mediocre, service was even worse. She was very rude throughout the whole experience. Don't come here unless you want to be treated poorly. I will not return.

This is my favorite Pho place. I ask for chicken with white meat and they always have high quality meat. The spring rolls are also very good; they come fresh crispy green leaves and a great presentation. The owner lady is very nice as well. Always a smile and perfect english.

I was in the area and found this place randomly on yelp. Everything we had was delicious. Here's what we ordered: - BBQ pork spring rolls : It was really good! I loved the flavor of the BBQ pork and the sauce that came with it. The only complaint I have is that the wrapper was a little dry. - pho with steak and brisket : Like what a lot of reviewers said, the broth is quite flavorful. The portions are big too. I had a small bowl, and it was very filling. - vietnamese coffee : yummy! I would definitely return if I'm in the area. I'd like to try their BBQ pork sandwich next time since the pork was just that good.

I had read so many great reviews on yelp. I was on a mission to find some bunh, and luckily, they had it here. The place is tucked in the spanish part of Redwood City. What a hidden gem! OMG! This place has the best broth ever! We ordered the pho tai. The broth is so fresh and tasty. It's not salty and you can see that it doesn't have too much grease. They give you a nice portion of beef and noodles. They even wash the bean sprouts and basil very good. Their steak rolled banh is sooo good. They wrap lean steak meat around green onions. Wrap the lettuce with thinly squares of thin vermicelli bun, beef roll, some basil, cilantro, and add some fish sauce, and mmmmm these kick any chicken lettuce cups ass. So good. The spring rolls are the best that I have EVER tried. It's so fresh and they don't put too much noodles, but more bean sprouts, meat, and shrimp. They accompany it with fresh peanut sauce with some hot sauce. Spring roll heaven! I've also tried their grilled chicken bun with imperial roll and that was amazing. Their rice plates are good, too. Everything in this place is good and they even take credit cards! WINNER! Def coming back for more!

I love Pho and Vietnamese food. I can and have eaten Pho on almost a daily basis so when I saw this restaurant while I was visiting the Taqueria across the street made it a mission to try it. I was disappointed. The spring rolls weren't the best and the ingredients in my Pho were subpar. While I ordered a large seafood Pho the serving size was easily a small with it being mostly broth. There were 4 pieces of seafood in my bowl (and YES i did count them before I started eating) as I didn't quite see how it was a seafood Pho - I should have gotten the brisket or tendon combo. The spring rolls were rolled in a similar fashion, the ingredient's were subpar (shrimp tasted bland and tough) and portion was small (thank goodness for the peanut sauce). Price is expensive for what you're getting and the hostess had a surly look on her face as clearly did not want to be there ( or serve us, not sure which ). I am on my search for another Pho restaurant near my office...... Suggestions??

This place is delicious. You definitely go for the food and not the ambiance. I've had the Pho (large bowl of the round steak) and the Eggplant & Chicken dish and both are really excellent. Nice blend of flavors, reasonable price. The Imperial eggrolls are also really yummy. I like that you can order S, L, and XL bowls of Pho. I've always found the restaurant to be full at lunch time, but usually we get the last open table. Parking is always bad and we have to walk several blocks. The service is all business; 100% focused on taking your order and moving on, no smiles or small talk. With easier parking and friendly service I'd be giving it 5 stars but it is already a perfect lunch spot.

A great place for pho. The rest of the menu is also very good. I've been going here for a long time. Friendly staff. I always get a large number 13 (beef brisket and pork) with meatballs and a cafe Vietnamese iced coffee. Mmmm. Parking can be a challenge, but you can find spots on Fifth, north of Middlefield.

Excellent tofu pho in beef broth. Veggies were fresh, tofu had good flavor, and beef broth was amazing.

Am I in Mexico? Do they even have pho in Mexico?? Ah, Middlefield Road in Redwood city.. go south of Woodside and you've now entered Mexico. Seriously, just look at the surroundings. (Strangely, go just another few blocks south and it suddenly transitions into a woodsy, upscale suburbia that is Atherton). Right smack in the middle of this Mexico-esque neighborhood is what seems to be the only non-Latin business, this pho place. It's cheaper than Pho Dong, and it tastes comparable, if not better. I had the spring rolls and the rice vermicelli with grilled prawns and chicken, and they were pretty good. My coworkers seemed to be satisfied with their pho, as well. I'm sure I'll return here from time to time. By the way.. I really hate how the pho smell sticks on your clothes afterwards. Eww..

SOLID. - Good pho (one of our friends who is allergic to MSG said that when she ate here, the adverse reaction was a lot less than in other places... so not perfect in that there is MSG, but... not heaping quantities either) - Friendly and prompt service - Value for money Not really sure what else you need from a pho place. BUT given that they DO serve stuff other than pho, it has to be said that I'm not a huge fan of their non-pho dishes.

My favorite place to go for pho - the broth is my comfort food, always flavorful with beef and herbs (not just sodium water) and warms my tummy even after the first sip. My co-workers and I go here often, so service is good for us. Jenny knows our orders and gets it started for us right when we get seated. Besides the pho, my other favorite is the shrimp spring roll appetizers, which are deliciously fresh and light. The peanut sauce that comes with the rolls is so tasty when mixed with some hot sauce! The only downside to this restaurant is that I would never come here by myself at night - the neighborhood is pretty sketchy, but slowly improving.

Discovered this excellent lunch spot for Pho, as I had no idea it was here. My wife and I stopped by today for lunch. It was quite crowded, but we lucked out and were able to sit down quickly. I ordered simple Pho Ga (chicken noodle soup). It came as expected. The chicken was super tender, and the noodles were delicious. The serving size was quite big. If you're used to ordering Pho, you'll be plenty full with their "large" size. They also offer an x-large size, which I couldn't imagine eating (and I'm a big guy). We were both stuffed. Waitresses were friendly. You have to pay at the register when you're done. I'll definitely be back to this place.

My review is for the Pho only. This place's pho is legit. You can tell a good pho by tasting the broth before adding any spice to it. The pho is served with a generous amount of meat and veggies. I think my favorite part about this restaurant is they offer a few more spices and mixes table-side so that you can really personalize the broth to your liking. I just wouldn't go here by myself at night. The joint is definitely a hole-in-the-wall and could be sketchy for a lone female. Other than that, I am happy to have found a pho joint in Redwood City! side note: They serve banh mi's - they're good but nothing to write home about. In a separate review I'd give the banh mi a 3.5/5 stars

We were intrigued by a highly rated Vietnamese restaurant in Little Mexico, so we gave it a shot, especially since we're huge pho fans. Here are our takeaways 1) I would not walk around this neighborhood at night 2) The pho is okay. but I've had better. I'd much rather go to Pho Dong in Redwood City (Broadway St) The only thing going for it is that there's an outstanding popsicle/fresh fruit store a few doors down.

The pho at this place is alright. I've had better in San Jose which would be a drive for me. Service is horrible at this place. Yes I got the "Can you finish eating in 15 mins?" 30 mins before their posted close time. Charging 50 cent for beef on the side. Mistake to their advantage on the bill. I'd just rather drive a little longer or eat something else.

While visiting Redwood City my wife and I decided to try a Vietnamese restaurant. At the Hometown Noodle on Middlefield Road, we found a very clean and friendly restaurant. We started our meal with shrimp spring rolls and found them to be delightful. Our entrée of sautéed beef and broccoli was nicely presented and the meat was very tender and juicy. I am going to urge my son who lives in Palo Alto to enjoy a meal here and will be sure to visit again next time we are in Redwood City.

I wanted to find a Pho place here in Redwood City and found this in the middle of all Mexican restaurants? Seated right away, we ordered the beef pho, I had my beef separate from my broth as usual. As a typical pho place, my drink came over my food also. I really enjoyed the meat, but the broth was a little too strong, like too much star anise or cinnamon tasting and smell. This bowl wouldn't be so bad if that problem went away and might have been pretty decent. Overall, I'll come back to try all the other dishes and they take credit over a certain limit, $10 or $15? Can't remember. They also have a restaurant.com gift cert for dinner only use.

Cool! I didn't know that there was a pho place over here! It's definitely an interesting area to locate a pho restaurant, because it's tucked in an area I refer to as "Little Mexico" of Redwood City... If you come here, you'll understand why. I ordered the rare steak & brisket pho and some imperial rolls. No complaints from me! They know how to make a good bowl of pho and they are generous with their portions. Yay, pho! i'll probably be back for more since it's close by. Quick Tip: Pho is good to eat if you have a hangover. Too bad they're closed on Sundays.

Hometown Noodle provided the food for a brunch for 30 we just held at our home. They came in early on Sunday morning to cook the food so it was super fresh and warm for serving. We had beef rolls, shrimp egg rolls, shrimp spring rolls and a roll with a lacy-looking wrap -- all yummy and perfect -- with appropriate dipping sauces. They also made a mixed chow mein style main dish that was fabulous. We couldn't stop eating and wish we had leftovers. The service was excellent - they were very concerned about meeting our expectations. In fact -- they exceeded our expectations. I know the pho is good. I think the English speaking (daughter) is named Jennie. She is all business and understands the importance of pleasing customers. It's your neighborhood "hole in the wall" place but very clean and they do a great job.

I come here for the veggie spring rolls (and sometimes chicken rolls). I consider the rolls very good, but perhaps they are just on par with other places. Most people come for the pho noodles. Having had pho at other restaurants, I would say this place is decent, but not fantastic. Overall, I like Hometown Noodle and consider a decent restaurant for a lunch meal. It's exactly what you would expect from a small restaurant. It's not high end, but the food is decent and price is affordable.

The pho here is probably the best you can find in Redwood City, even though their large bowl is still sort of on the small side for me (Pho Thanh Long in Santa Clara has completely warped my perception as far as what a large bowl should look like). Sure, you can't bathe yourself in the bowl, but it's still enough to fill you up in a pinch. Only downside is they don't do meat on the side, but not that many people are crazy like me and want that, I think. Bottom Line: I'd say come here over Pho Dong if you can.

Still my go to pho place in the area. It isn't among the top rated compared to the San Jose joints but this satisfies my belly without taking a 2 hour lunch.

Great food great service!! Came here and the food was really great!! Pho broth tasted good for sure!! Meats were actually tender and cooked well!! The meats for their pork and shrimp were filling and gigantic!! the only thing is that I wasn't a super big fan of the egg rolls. They didn't come around for water refills though. Customer service was pretty good overall though. I came with my grandma and mom. As they gave us our meal, we were fiddling for extra bowls and spoons and they were too kind to oblige, and even grabbed some utensils at our table to make things easier!! For the price it's unbeatable!! I think the area isn't the greatest, but not unsafe. Hard to spot, but look for it and it's quite a treat! Bottomline: Come here for a great Pho fix or noodle dish look. Delicious, and relatively cheap!

I went with 2 friends, one friend is from Vietnam so she was helpful regarding the menu. We ordered #35 Banh Hoi, a wonderful cold noodle dish with prawns and beef on the side that you roll into lettuce leaves. If you want to order something unique to the usual Pho experience, you may want to try this dish. Terrific flavor and fun to eat. Only downfalls include limited on street parking in a fringe area, slower service especially when you order something different than Pho. I've been here once before for Pho; but the dish I described above makes me want to come here again soon.

When I realized there was a pho place close to home I realized I had to try it. And who knew of all places, it'd be surrounded by burritos, Michoacan grocery markets and clothing stores. Parking is not too bad, there are several spots in front of the restaurant and then spots on the residential, side streets. Once I entered I was pleasantly surprised by it's cleanliness, typical pho restaurant layout and a warm greeting by the Vietnamese gentleman. The place holds about 12 tables and we were promptly seated and given our menus. After we ordered, we both got our plates of fresh bean sprouts, basil leaves and jalapeno slivers. Shortly after, I was presented with my small round steak and well done brisket pho ($5.95) and my brother received his large combo (round steak, well done brisket, tendon and tripe) with out the tripe ($6.95). If you want a bang for your buck, go for the large bowl since the small bowl is smaller than other pho restaurants. Just make sure you can finish your large bowl! The noodles, broth and meat were okay. I didn't find much brisket in my bowl (more round steak) and the noodles seemed like there were cold before hand and then dunked in the hot broth. When served, it made a ball of noodles that was hard to unravel. The broth was beefy and had a nice amount of fresh green and white onions. The service was great here, the servers very hospitable and really pay attention to the cleanliness of their place. I would definitely come back when my pho crave strikes again due to it's close proximity and a-okay pho and friendly, hospitable service.

Yelp did not steer me wrong - Hometown is in an unexpected place (the barrio) but seems to be actually run by Vietnamese people, which puts it ahead of Pho Dong in downtown RWC. It's less "nice" than PD, but perfectly acceptable. The pho was excellent and cheap, and the imperial rolls seemed more authentic than PD's eggrolly ones. The service was also good. Perfect for a rainy night!

Came to Hometown Noodle after being referred by 3 different friends to try it out. They weren't exagerrating about the great quality pho this place has to offer in a random location of Redwood City. Being surrounded by soooo many Hispanic businesses, I'm baffled on how this Vietnamese restaurant does business wise. The pho was definitely some of the best pho I've ever had. The noodles were delicious and the broth was verrryy flavorful. The quantity was exactly as I'd prefer, no more or no less. And the beef was tastyyyyy. Our Imperial Rolls were a perfect way to warm up with an appetizer too! ONLY thing holding Hometown Noodle back from being a 5 star is the fact that I had to ask for water and when I ran out of water I was still offered no refill. Pretty big pet peeve in my book but regardless, Hometown Noodle is still highly recommended and VERY good quality wise.

My friend Pat and I went here for pho. I never had pho before and and I must say this hole-in-the-wall in Redwood City is a really good restaurant. It's really small and hard to find but the pho is really good and it's pretty cheap. I got the beef pho and it was really good.

I love pho and so does my man, we go to pho at least once a week and love to try new pho spots all the time. Our friend recommended that we try Hometown Noodle and said that their broth was exceptionally good. Their noodles are very good, I hate it when I go to pho places and the quality of their rice noodles are so bad that they literally disintegrate in the soup... This was DEFINITELY not the case here and I was extremely delighted with this! The broth is also unlike any other pho place I've been to... I can say the noodles are comparable to a couple other pho spots that I like but the broth is by far unlike any other I've had at any other place and that alone would keep me coming back. Their prices are reasonable and we have tried a couple different soups there and have not been disappointed. I would say this place is pretty solid food wise but the customer service sucks, as most pho places do. If you can overlook the sucky service since its a hole-in-the-wall kinda place where much interaction isn't needed since everything comes so quick then I would DEFINITELY recommend that you try it!

The Background: A hole in the wall pho restaurant that seems out of place in the little Mexico part of Middlefield. Like many pho restaurants, the food is good and plentiful. The thing that stands out the most is its location this far north and west of many other Vietnamese restaurants. The Positives: The food here is pretty good and made quickly. I think my favourite part of the place was the mom and pop nature of the restaurant and the great customer service. The time I went, they were closing up shop (I had thought they closed a hour later then they did and I slid in a few minutes before closing time.) Even with my late arrival, they were friendly and nice in serving the food. The Negatives: None.

For a casual spot this place has the best Pho in the Bay Area. I have been searching high and low for some competition. It's been 3 years and NO LUCK. I cant speak about any of the other dishes. All I know is that the Pho is on point. This stuff comes out steaming hot. The noodles are perfect, not mushy like some other places. The broth is packed with flavor. The meat is good, chicken or beef it doesn't matter. The only drawback is not enough meat so I go American style= EXTRA MEAT for a small fee. Plenty of bean sprouts, fresh basil, jalapenos and limes. The best part about everything is the consistency, they must have a robot or something in the kitchen making this stuff. The taste hasn't changed as long as Ive been going. I have never seen the chef but this dude brings his A-game. Oh yeah, when you get seated be ready to order because they move fast especially during lunch time this place gets more packed than a sardine can. Will I go back? Hell Yeah!

I would prob give this place 3.5 stars... My lady & I love Pho.. We eat it on the reg... My buddy mentioned this place & I saw the yelp reviews.. so we decided to ride on down on a fairly early Fri night... Nothing fancy about the area or atmosphere... Its fairly small.. 4 of us walked n & it seemed like it was so quite & every one just dropped what they were doing & like observed us lol.. Anywho.. I just order the rare steak (round) & brisket pho.. fairly standard.. & an order of spring rolls.. Spring rollss ehh some places they are $75c cheaper & they include a bit of pork.. these.. did not.. oh well.. Now the soup... great broth... decent noodles... decent meat... howevery 3 bites into my girls pho..she found a LONG WHITE HAIR.. it was so long & thick ew... She said "at least it didnt get half wedged in my throat & have to pull it out (nastttty lol)....They quickly said sorry after she told them & quickly removed the exposed one & brought a new... (I thought it was funny my girlfriend was like "heres the hair i found & he shoved it back in the soup lol) Anyways.. for what it is its reasonable.. Im not gonna ding it.. its deff solid.. & I would prob go if I was in the general area.. & next time im getting my rare steak on the side so I can enjoy it a little bit more pink!

The location is scary at times but totally worth it. Why a vietnamese restaurant is tucked into little Mexico eludes me.. The Pho is really top notch. Both the beef and chicken are really quite good. The Sandwiches are ok... so I usually go with one of the pho options. Glad to have a good Pho place reasonably near Menlo.

  • Lolia S.

I agree with Jim C. on this one. The pho is good (nice broth) but they do give you less meat than most other pho places. I ordered pho with tendon and rare steak. The steak was cut too thickly and wasn't that tasty - still the meat is better than what they give you at Pho Dong. They also didn't provide many bean sprouts or basil and there was only one lime wedge. However, the usual sauces are available and it's the only place in RWC that carries banh mi (at least, that I know of). They have four kinds of Vietnamese sandwiches for $4.50 each: BBQ pork, beef, chicken, and vegetarian. Besides pho, they have rice plates, paddy noodles, fried rice, appetizers and other noodle soups. Prices are $1 or $2 higher than SF. I didn't know what paddy noodles were but apparently the rice noodles are served in paddy form, topped with peanuts (so it's a dry dish). The restaurant is larger than a hole in the wall with paintings and pictures of food for decor - not a fancy place but a step above a hole in the wall. The service was fast and the food came quickly during lunch. I wonder how it wound up opening up in an area that's dominated by Mexican businesses - feels out of place. I would come back to try the banh mi though it's a bit of a hike from the office for banh mi.

Our new favorite pho joint!!! Yes, neighborhood is a little iffy and I will avoid coming here after dark, but if we want pho, sorry but Little Saigon will no longer be our go-to spot! The broth was excellent! As another poster stated, it's very fragrant, but that's what is so lovely about it. It's not just watered down basic broth. Ok, so we had a restaurant.com certificate (which they stated they no longer accept but they took it last night for us) so my daughter and I had to load up to reach the $35 limit. Which is fine since it forced us to try a few items: Soda lemonade - freshly squeezed and just the right amount of sugar made an awesome refreshing drink! Beef pho for me, chicken pho for the little girl, both with rice noodles - both were excellent broth, noodles, and meat Combination fried rice - I'm not usually a fan of fried rice from pho joints, but this one was quite yummy! Not as moist and flavorful as your typical thai fried rice, but definitely more so than chinese fried rice. Shrimp egg rolls - basically the imperial rolls with a shrimp wrapped with it, very yummy as well! Not too greasy which is hard to get. And I saved the best for last, bbq pork. I don't know why I even ordered it cause I usually avoid pork at pho joints. But man, I'm so glad we got it!!! I realize the purpose of our visit was for the pho, but I'm seriously going to have to order this everytime I come here! YUM YUM YUM!!! And to top off all this great food, the service was superb and they take credit cards!!! Imagine that, a pho joint that accepts cards!!! :) 5 solid stars for Hometown Noodle!!! My daughter can't wait to go again :)

You know how a few of those nail shops that you feel are talking about you behind your back sometimes? That's what this place at the beginning felt like. I know most asian restaurants tend to be in and out quick to eat places...However I was meeting with a friend and caught up in chatting that I really didn't pay attention to the menu. We apologized to the waitress the two times she came by that I hadn't made a decision yet... I'm also Vietnamese which not many Vietnamese people realize that I am, so she went ahead and talked smack about how I couldn't make up my mind and whined about it. So definitely lost a star there. So I ended up ordering the chargrilled pork and eggroll with vermicelli noodles. Fish sauce did not have enough vinegar in it and was a bit bland. The pork was an unusual red color rather than brown. The eggroll was not too great. I really did not eat much of my meal and my friend ended up eating the rest of what I had left. lol. Definitely won't be back again.

SOLID 4 STARS Thank you Yelpers for another successful diner & a full tummy. Special thanks for the recs VB L. Yep, totally jacked your order listed. Since it was a success here it is for you to copy too ; ) We had the shrimp spring rolls and the #13 small (round steak w/ brisket.) Hubby had the combination pho. We also shared some of the 33 Vietnamese beer. We are pho full. me=dork Tip: You pay at the counter. We missed this part and thought the service was poor. Our bad. To be totally clear the service was quick and friendly. Wt liked these folks. Spread the word. We'd go back too, but it's a little out of the way for us. We'll see. Parking is a bit tricky.

There's not many great vietnamese places in the mid-peninsula, given that I'm from SoCal and Little Saigon was a weekly visit, I definitely know Pho and vermicelli noodles. That and I'm vietnamese ;) So this review is for bay area vietnamese food, which just won't be as good as Bolsa. The Pho here is good, the broth has good flavor which is the basis of all good Pho. I'd recommend if you are adventurous get it with the tripe which is the traditional way. Vermicelli noodle with grilled pork is good as well. I've had 6 or 7 different dishes their now and I'd say they are all pretty good. If you are looking for the best mid-peninsula vietnamese place this is it, albeit not in the best neighborhood (it's not dangerous, just a bit ghetto). Clearly family run, and I'll be back. Pho Dong is in downtown redwood city if you want a nicer atmosphere and location. This is ore of a "find". I'd give this 4 stars and Pho Dong 3.7. Again, all based on bay area vietnamese. Or put another way, it's a Zagat 21

Solid place for pho in RWC. Meat offerings include all the usual cuts of beef except for gau (fatty brisket). I had the tai chin gan (rare steak, well done steak and tendon) and enjoyed it. Their large bowl is humongous! Generous amounts of meat and noodles. I ordered their soybean milk to drink and it was absolutely delicious. It tasted homemade, which I haven't had in years. Most places just buy it by the half-gallon from tofu distributors. On another visit I had the bun thit nuong cha gio (vermicelli noodles with grilled beef and egg rolls) and I liked it, however it was missing the usual herbs like mint and basil and I found the nuoc mam (fish sauce) to be too mild tasting. Of course, I'm Vietnamese so I am used to pungent intense flavors haha. Service was very friendly. I would definitely return.

I don't know how anyone will ever find this place or stop by here on accident because it is in the boonies. I guess the Costco that's a mile away helps but this Vietnamese restaurant is camouflaged among many tacquerias in Mexico town. But if you can find it, you will like what they have to offer. Great big bowls of pho served freshly hot and they have a great selection of appetizers. Service is great, clearly a family-run business so they like to make you feel at home. Prices are very reasonable and you will leave here thinking, "I don't know how I ended up here, but I'm glad I did."

When I first saw the neighborhood where this place is located, I said to myself, "damn, when am I gonna get robbed?" Anyway, so Brian B, Patrick O & I ate here the other day and I gotta tell you that the chicken noodle here is actually pretty good. I tried not to fuck up my broth with an unbalanced ratio of hoisin sauce and sriracha, but with my luck it sort of happened lol. I like the fact that they give us separate plates of bean sprouts and basil for each of our pho and I surprisingly didn't need more considering I consume an unruly amount of basil lol. The cilantro is already in the pho which is a plus. The ambiance in this place is like any other pho place i've been too, and its never their strongest suit. But anyway, this place has good pho but nothing extraordinary AND the service is A+. I'll be coming back here soon enough.

Hometown Noodle is a little unusual for a Pho restaurant. Observe: There is no "Pho" preceeded by a number in its name. It's in the middle of the Mexican part of Middlefield, far away from other Asian restaurants. It is very, very clean inside. Yes, I was skeptical on first approach too. But the appetizers are as good as expected, the Pho has enough noodles and meat, the soup is well flavored and not high on the MSG scale, and the coffee tastes as it should. Ding! We have a winner! No more driving North or South to fill my Pho cravings anymore. This is good enough.

PROs: 1) A decent Pho joint in the Mid-Pennisula area. I dont have to trek down to San Jose! 2) Friendly service, although they can be abrupt when it's busy lunch time 3) Al dente pho noodles that is just right 4) Prices are decent (6.75) small bowl with decent amount of noodles, beef and meatball ($1.00 extra) 5) Soup/Broth - decent enough and better tasting then other Pho joints in the Millbrae, Daly City, San Mateo, SSF area I'm just surprised to find an obscure pho joint in the middle of a very Mexican shopping strip on Middlefield The "rice" dishes looks like it caters to "unauthentic" Vietnamese crowd.

Ok no joke so I have been living on redwood city for over 15 years- I was always puzzled why this spot is in the middle of a while bunch of Mexican businesses. My father (a true Mexican) is a regular here and brought me here for lunch. I was rather impressed by the freshness of the pho and by far the best! They are very generous with the rice noodles. My father has the chicken and rice dish and WOW it was delicious!! I am looking forward to my next chow down here.

Veggie Spring Rolls - excellent. BBQ Pork Sandwich - also excellent. Pho - very, very good. Besides their food being delicious, what I love about this place is that it is super-clean for a Pho place... Usually I cringe at the dirty build-up on the spoons, sauce dishes, and tables at pho places. But at this place, their utensils and dishes are shiny and spotless. Also, with the noodle soup, the accompanying basil and bean sprouts are also clean and fresh. Only item on my wishlist is that I wish they opened a litte bit later. I usually don't start craving Pho until after 930pm. They close too early, at 830pm. I don't really blame them though, it's good to have a life.

4 stars for pho noodles and broth. 3 stars for egg rolls and pho meats. 2 stars for bun. I think the spring rolls were fine but don't recall. In SJ this is a 3-star place but on the peninsula, can't be too picky so when you need a pho fix, this is a decent choice.

I finally went here the other day - I will write as a caveat that I did just move here from Huntington Beach - the unofficial pho capital of the US so I am a little spoiled. I had the "white boy" pho tai and some spring rolls - I was impressed by the soup - it was tasty but there was not much meat, and apparently they do not do the raw meat on the side (or I did not manage to ask for it correctly). The spring rolls were tasty but nothing out of the ordinary. I did take my mom and it was her first time eating pho and she is over the moon about it - I am going to have to take her down to Milpitas next! Overall tasty and the place was clean and the staff was very friendly - I am not going to take my Vietnamese friends here when they are in town but I am for sure going back!

I dig this place. They have good pho, and they make their eggrolls with rice paper. Broth is very good, and the noodles are tasty. I will be back here for lunch.

Pho isn't something I eat very often, but every time I have a craving for it, Hometown Noodle is where I head. Their broth is flavorful and not too salty, the noodles are never over-cooked, and the basil, bean sprouts and jalepenos are always fresh and crisp. I usually order a small chicken pho, and find it plentiful. I work a couple of miles from this place, so have only been here during the day. I imagine the neighborhood is a bit sketch at night, but fine during the day. If you live or work in the mid-Penn, it's definitely worth the trip.

I really like this place. It's hard to find good pho in the area and I'm glad I did. Really good pho with good noodles, great broth, and fresh meat/veggies. I also ordered the bbq pork spring rolls. They were good, but nothing special I suppose. If there was one complaint, it's that the large pho bowl seems to be slightly lacking in meat. That said, it's still quite tasty! I went there on back to back days and will definitely return.

Great pho. It is not as salty as the place in san antonino, which is a big plus. Highly recommend.

We had DINNER here; Inspired food with flaws. First of all, I thought the prices to be a tad steep for a viet place in da ghetto of redwood city. Though I will say the inside was more cute and cleaner than I had expected from the outside. I had the coconut curry chicken over with rice, and while the sauce was excellent, the chicken was overcooked and tough and rubbery -- that's too bad because this could have been a great dish! Some pieces of chicken seemed fine so it was like, great piece, bad piece, great piece, rubber piece, and so on (you get the idea I hope). My wife had beef over cold noodles (Bun) and that beef tasted great! Also, the soda can was warm to the touch and FLAT once drinking it from the glass. Flat coke -- not good. Also, I've been to a bunch of viet places since I've been here and just love spring rolls now. These spring rolls were the most sub par I've had in the bay area. Mind you nothing terrible, but undersized and not as fresh as I've had elsewhere. I'll definitely go back and give it another whirl though since it is so close, I'm hoping to upgrade this local to a 4 but just can't do it right now.

My friend took me here for dinner and the food was good! Their crispy egg rolls were soo tasty. Some of the best egg rolls I ever had. Soo good wrap with lettuce and white radish. Even better with beer, and my first time with Vietnamese beer. I had a beef strip/tripe pho dish which was okay, too much soup and needs more noodles. My friend had thin shrimp noodles, which was excellent. I should have order that. The area is a bit umm, sketchy, but I felt safe with police patrols around the area. Service friendly and quick, would come back to this place.

Very clean and the seafood noodles are the best. Their rice dishes are good. Portions are good, not overly generous but sufficient. Travel from SF just to order their noodles and order their BBQ pork sandwiches, the latter can only be ordered to go. Service is excellent. Been back numerous times. Parking can be difficult at times.

Awesome Pho, Bun noodle bowls and excellent spring rolls. really small place but service was good, the place full, and people were really enjoying themselves. Definitely go back if nothing else for more fresh springrolls.

#13 steak and brisket is hella good. Parking kinda sucks. You need to be here a little early at about 11:30am no later to be safe on parking and seating. Other then that it is hard to find a Vietnamese Pho place like this in my area of work which is Menlo Park.

Parking was a little tricky on this pretty busy section of Middlefield but eventually found a spot about a block and half away. Seated quickly by a nice lady and we both ordered some pho (Hubster has a raging illness). About 5 minutes later, said pho was at our table! Incredible! I know it was fresh though b/c I could see a man making it in the kitchen through a little window. Not too many onions thank goodness (onions=blech) and the broth was pretty good, I still added some lime, hot sauce and soy sauce to pep it up. Great noodles, just perfect texture and flavor and they didn't stick together in a big clump. Chicken was ok, not really flavorful but at least it wasn't dry or stringy or fatty. Hubster really liked his flank steak and tendon pho, but he was sick so think what you want about his opinion. It was nearly full in here by the time we left and everyone looked happy so that's a good sign. I'd like to come back and try some of their other food, saw some stuff come out of the kitchen that looked and smelled great.

For me their Pho was average. Personally I'd prefer Pho Little Saigon in San Mateo/Foster City - not only because they're closer but also because parking is a lot easier there..

Decent tasting pho but they skimp on the meat and noodles (at least in the small size). The non-fried summer rolls didn't look fresh and came with all the translucent skins stuck together like glue. The shrimp in them were not fresh. The place is a modest place in a ghettoey part of Redwood City among a number of Mexican convenience stories and taquerias. Bottom line: I wasn't wowed by the soup nor the old summer rolls. And I don't prefer this ghetto part of town. I think I'll stick with Pho Saigon on Foster City Marina Plaza or Pho Dong in downtown Redwood City.

I've been pleasantly surprised the two times I've been here. The food is fresh and flavorful. It was quite busy today but I didn't have to wait long at all and the hostess is always pleasant. I would definitely recommend the bun and lemongrass chicken - I cant wait to try out the rest of the menu!

I was craving some pho and I hadn't found a place in the area that I would really want to go back to. Thank you fellow Yelpers!!! You don't go here for atmosphere, but the service is excellent. They were very nice and the pho was so tasty. They made my vegetarian pho with the beef broth to order and my boyfriend got the Combination pho. I'd definitely recommend it and I can't wait to go back!

I knew I wouldn't be happy with this restaurant as soon as I asked if I can substitute flank steak with meatballs. The waitress' response was "NO! Never substitute. NEVER!". Ok that was good customer service. The pho was not authentic and lacked flavor. Will never be going back here again.

Unexpected local treasure. The neighborhood is predominantly Hispanic, so who would have guessed a nice Pho presence? Most authentic Vietnamese place in the area. I love the Bun--but I avoid the chicken one (here).

No smiles or small talk. The first thing the server said when she saw the restaurant.com certificate was they wouldn't take another one from me again. The food was tasty, but portions were somewhat small. A couple who came in after we did were "greeted" by the younger server with "you need to hurry up and choose, we are closing soon" even though it was about half an hour until their posted closing time. They put down their menus and walked out, not too surprising. If I were the owner, I would have fired her on the spot. It's really too bad, the food was pretty good, but good food doesn't make up for surly service. I'll never go back.

Love this place - it is my go to Pho restaurant. The chicken spring rolls are also delicious (but ask for the peanut sauce). It doesn't look like much from the outside, but we always receive quick, friendly service and the food is great.

Solid pho, and good rolls, decent price as well. But it's not an incredible place. To me it was like going to a movie where you're not expecting much (given the surrounding area) and you get something tasty. I'm definitely not complaining but it wasn't the greatest ever... etc etc... but I'll be back from time to time. Somewhere I can go nearby to get my vietnamese fix. :)

This is a good place for people who is seeking inexpensive Pho with decent quality in the Palo Alto/Menlo Park area. It is a family restaurant with casual atmosphere. I'd say if they could make the place a bit warmer like they used to before the recent decoration, I would have given them a four star. They are located near Costco, so it's a good option if you are pumping gas and want something other than a hot dog or a slice of pizza. Warm it up!

Ok, let me preface this by saying that the only thing I've ever eaten here was a banh mi (a.k.a. Vietnamese sandwich/Vietnamese sub/whatever you want to call two slices of bread with Vietnamese-y ingredients contained within), so take this review for what it is. One day I will go back for pho and edit my rating accordingly, but for now... it's sammich time. I had a banh mi craving, so I checked around for somewhere to get one locally on Yelp. Found Hometown Noodle, and made a concerted effort to visit. Once I parked, I walked into a restaurant devoid of patrons, aside from one guy slurping down pho alone. The lack of business might have been a little sketchy to me, had I not realized that I was walking in at a weird hour between every normal person's lunch and dinner. (I am not normal.) No stars lost there. I ordered the bbq pork sandwich to go, and the waitress, who was relatively friendly, told me to have a seat, and then offered me some water as she chopped some unseen things behind the counter. 10 minutes later (yes, TEN minutes. Or maybe less, I don't know... I was craning my neck to watch the Willams/Capriati tennis match on their tv, and lost track of time, but it FELT like a long time - as long as time can feel once you've lost track of it. Oh, whatever.), out came my sandwich. All 6" of it. For $4.95. Ok, now I get that $5 for a 6" sub isn't a bad deal if you're eating at a traditional deli or something, but when I think of banh mi, I think of cheap eats. Like, really cheap. Like, the 12" sandwiches from the place in Oakland's Chinatown for under $3 each. So this was kind of a surprise to me. I expected it to be a little bigger. Size kind of matters, and if someone tells you otherwise, it's probably because yours isn't big enough. Uh, I mean- wait...what was I saying? Oh right. Sandwiches. Mine was a little small. But I happily paid, and left, rushing home to unwrap my sammichy goodness so I could cram it down my throat. (Sexy.) Once I opened up the paper, I realized that, although stubby, my sandwich was rather girthy and stuffed with meat. Girth is good, sandwichly speaking, you know? Things were looking up. I took one bite, and while I'd love to be able to go into detail about how it tasted, the moment my teeth hit the bread, everything melted into a Photoshoppy, happy sort of blur of succulent grilled meat with nuances of lemon grass, crispy daikon and carrot pickles, and bright cilantro. I was awash in a sea of banh mi goodness. Too dramatic? Ok, fine. It was a good sandwich. Honestly, it was lacking a bit in the cilantro and pickled veggie department, and fresh slices of jalapeno and/or any kind of appreciable heat were noticeably absent, but it almost made up for it with the abundance of meat. If a lot of meat makes your skirt fly up, then this place is for you. Next time, I'll ask them for extra everything. And there will be a next time. Unless I discover a cheaper, tastier, longer, and just as girthy banh mi for around the same price in my 'hood. -1 star for price, although now I'm starting to feel like an a*shole for thinking $5 is a lot for a sandwich... -1 star for size

Came here for lunch with a co-worker, we both ordered the combination pho. I ordered the small (serving size was big) but they didn't give you very much meets (it was mostly noodles). I've had better tasting broth at other places in the east bay. Service was good and food came fast, as do most if not all pho restaurant . We also order the bbq park spring roll and that alone is the reason I gave it a 3 star. I think I will come back again to try the bbq pork dishes because that bbq pork in the spring roll was really good!

My family and I try all sorts of pho places looking for one that has pho broth that tastes the way our #1 favorite place does (it's in Oahu, HI so don't get to it much), and generally we're disappointed in the flavors. BUT NOT HERE! This place is now our favorite pho place for the taste of the broth that is full and flavorful. Some folks may think it's a bit heavy on the herbs and spices but for us, that's where the flavor is. We went on a Sat for lunch and got egg rolls #1-3 - all tasted great and was fresh from the fryer. I think the only thing I would have preferred is a little more flavor in the dipping sauce and enough lettuce to eat the egg rolls the traditional way but then again not everyone in our group used lettuce so there was plenty for those of us who did. 4/5 of us got Combo #11 (steak, brisket, tendon, tripe) and the 5th got #23. I ate my whole bowl of large pho and drank quite a bit of the broth. This is a little hole in the wall amidst a neighborhood of mexican restaurants with street parking only. Both the waiter and waitress were very friendly and they were talking to us about how they make their pho broth and how they started their restaurant, asked frequently if everything was ok or if we needed anything else and for us to tell them if anything can be improved, they'll tell the cook. Looking forward to trying their vietnamese sandwiches which is only for take-out. I just wished this was a little closer to me so i can go more often! The 5 stars is for the taste of the food, friendliness, service, good value and interest in feedback. With so many pho restaurants around and so few with a truly good authentic broth, this one would almost get my 5 star vote just for that, but the rest was good for a hole in the wall.

Very decent place for good home-cooked Vietnamese food using fresh ingredients. Decor is modest and location is humble. But the food is good and the staff pleasant. Dining area is clean. Try it out. Have tried multiple orders and have not been disappointed yet.

Disappointing to say the least. Normally I've found yelp reviews to be pretty spot on but this was far from the case. I went with my girlfriend and together we got 4 different items all of which were sub-par. The rice paper for the springroll was tough and chewy. The shrimp eggroll was incredibly dense and flavorless. The pho ga broth was bland and the condiments (basil, bean sprout, etc.) was weak in quality and portion. The vegetable noodle did have plenty of veggies but they were undercooked and the broth was not good. I've been to many pho shops all over the peninsula and this was, unfortunately, by far the worst. The one plus was that the owners were friendly as far as pho places go. Bottom line is that I won't be going back. Also, the Vietnamese coffee sucked. I didn't know that was possible.

Hometown used to be the best Pho in town, but now with competition around they just seem to be falling--not a good sign. I believe competition should make a restaurant better. I called in a take out order from my desk and ran over to pick it up. It was ready to go when I arrived which I was pleased about. However, when I got back to my desk and opened the box which had the chicken & noodles for my Pho--I found only scraps of shredded chicken & noodles. I remember getting take out in the past and having huge CHUNKS of moist chicken. This stuff that I got tasted bland and was REALLY dry. I also ordered the springrolls with shrimp and found only 1 piece of shrip per roll...pretty crummy. I understand that overhead is most likely rising while their patronage is dropping...but it'll will keep dropping if this lack of quality continues.

Yum. I eat here a couple of times a month and have never been disappointed. Food is fresh, well prepared, perfectly seasoned, not greasy, not fatty, not grizzly, and service is fast. I tend to order the same things over and over, including vermicelli with egg rolls and grilled chicken or pork (great), spring rolls (very good), pho (only have eaten it here, so have nothing to compare to...it was good), and lemon grass chicken (tasty). Not sure how the other menu items hold up. I have tried other vietnamese places throughout the Bay Area, and so far, this is hands down my favorite.

For the peninsula, the Vietnamese food here is pretty good and the service is great. We've ordered party trays for several parties and Jenny, the person in charge of catering orders, is super nice and accomodating. My favorite party trays are the imperial egg rolls, special Hometown wraps, grilled beef rolls, and shrimp spring rolls. When I eat at the restaurant, I normally stick with pho or bun. A big minus is that finding parking around the restaurant is a real pain in the keister.

When we lived on this side of the city (redwood city, that is -- i never tire of this joke), we used to go to Hometown Noodle probably twice a month -- usually on weeknights. This place is a hole in the wall and is family owned and run -- with the mom running the front of the house, the dad in the kitchen, and the kids doing homework and helping out where they can. The pho is exactly what you expect and are looking for, and the imperial rolls are my favorite I've found. The food is inexpensive, and this place is family friendly as it's never very crowded. Highly recommended.

If you know your vietnamese food then you will know that this place is a bit lacking. They don't have the must have items on the list like the XXL (Xe Lua) or the rice plate with egg, grilled pork, shredded pork, and egg roll. The taste is not the best but they do generate a lot of business being only a couple of blocks away from the Human Services Agency. They call themselves the best in town and I guess they are because I dont see any other vietnamese places around. There are alot of parking around but beware of the birds. They gave my car a new make over ... FML

Very good pho - it's a weekly fix for coworkers and myself. Where else can I get tasty pho with vinegared/pickled jalapenos, and some really kick donkey hot sauce - the thick chili paste? Try the crispy number 1 egg rolls (special ones) - ask for fried hard. For pho: Order number 51 with beef broth and extra chicken (less noodle, more vegetable-yeo!) Want some bun hun?- get the pork/egg roll combo, and ask (nicely) to have a fried egg on top To finish it off - avacado shake (no pearl, less sugar, no whip). And for a snack later in the day... get a sandwich - recently added menu item - the pork sandwich was recommended and was quite nice. Aww... man I'm hungry for some pho!

We often order party trays from Hometown Noodle for work, so I've had many dishes here, and all have been pretty good. I very rarely go to the actual restaurant to dine, but all in all, it's your typical vietnamese restaurant. Usually pretty packed during lunch, and service is pretty fast. The owners have changed a couple of times in the past few years, so there was a period of time where the quality went a little downhill. But the current owners have brought the quality back up and I think I enjoy it more now that I did before. My favorites are the grilled beef rolls, grilled pork, tofu curry, and the spring rolls. They also have very cheap sandwiches that are always convenient and quick for lunch.

coworkers and I go here at least once a week (sometimes 2). this place is way better than pho dong. service is good can get a bit slow if its packed but they do a pretty good job and are always nice and accommodating. We get the veggie pho in beef broth and sometimes add beef. The broth is very tasty and the veggies are PERFECT! not mushy, but fresh and crisp. The neighborhood is a bit run down, but we have never had a problem. normally I can't finish the bowl, it is huge! When it's hot, the bbq pork vermacelli bowl is AMAZING!! pork is tasty and not all gristle like at pho dong. the veggie spring rolls are great too, but i prefer to save room for the massive bowl of yummy pho.

At the suggestion of Cindy G, I ordred the lemongrass Tofu. Unfortunately, they came back a minute later and said they were out of tofu, so I got the chicken instead. It came out quickly, and it was tasty. Pretty affordable, too. Reminds me of southside berkeley food. Everything's about $6-8, big portions. When the waitress asked me if I wanted it spicy, I said "yes", sure in my assumption that it would not actually be what a Vietnamese person would consider spicy, and indeed I was correct. The spiciness leve was comfortable for me, but that might be too low for some. Still, like any Vietnamese place, they have hot sauce on the table, for those masochists out there.

Pho: The ingredients were standard and the broth was the spicy/fragrant variety. The broth was good enough to go with the noodles but did not taste good enough to just slurp up on its own (not deep or interesting enough flavor). Still, pretty good by Peninsula standards. UPDATE: Have come here a couple more times and the broth tastes pretty good but you must order the meatballs (extra buck). Very tasty. We ordered the small bowl the first time we went and I was still hungry. I ordered the large bowl the second time I went and that was just enough (the large would be a regular in San Francisco or San Jose). The imperial rolls were tasty. They were fresh fried and we could taste the ingredients (shrimps, skins, etc..) unlike old imperial rolls where everything just tastes gummy. Also tried the home specialty rolls but the combination of ingredients (taro) did not stand out flavorwise and didn't present the variety of textures that the imperial rolls had The first time we went for dinner and the place was close to empty. The second time I went for lunch and it was close to full. The restaurant isn't in the ritzy part of Redwood City but it didn't feel unsafe either.

We had lunch there today and we were unpleasantly surprised by the lack of customer service. The manger/server that took our order wasn't too pleased with us when we placed our order. We ordered a large bowl of Pho, imperial rolls and a lunch plate. She seem to be implying that we didn't order enough food to sit at their restaurant because she kept repeating "that's it?" There were 5 of us but we were not that hungry. We did not deserve this kind of treatment from thus establishment. Bad,bad, bad service. I will NEVER ear at this restaurant ever.

My gf and I had moved to redwood city about 3 weeks ago. We've been dying to try out some pho places b/c the usual San Jose pho places are too far away now. Booo to that. So yesterday on my way home from Target, I decided to try this place b/c it seemed to have a good overall rating. I ordered the pho beef ball noodles to go. They only have 1 size and that's a large. When I came to pick up the noodles, I believe that the owners were thinking competitive advantage. They decided to have their restaurant on a street surrounded by Mexican Hispanic cuisine. Although this may have been a good idea, I did not think they had put good ideas into making the broth. Unfortunately, the broth was watered down and the scant hints of flavor were reminiscent of my college days of instant noodles. To add insult to injury, the beef balls were divided into quarters. I understand these are tough times but you're charging me $8 for just noodles, water broth, and a grand total of 4 whole beef balls (if you were to put all the quarters together). Those beef balls may have been in the freezer for quite some time. On a good note they provided sufficient amounts of bean sprouts, basil, and jalapenos. Needless to say, I think I'm going to stick to the San Jose pho places.

Who would have known that you can get good, reliable vietnamese food in the middle of Mexico. Prices are reasonable and portions are large. We always leave this place full. We either get pho or noodle salad with grilled pork and egg roll. Not fancy, in and out in 30min.

good pho, good pho. i was lookin for a close pho in the area and since its like 10 minutes from me, i was very satisfied. let the pho king break down the pho madness. broth- first taste test. it passed. it was flavorful, fragrant, and not too salty. it wasn't the best ive had but it was quite good. noodles - nice and chewy. again wasn't the best but they were good noodles meat- a lil skimpy. coulda added a bit more size - they have medium, large, and x-large. i opted to go for large and i was full and satisfied cleanliness - the place is pretty clean, clean for a pho place service - u know, suprisingly the service is really good. three different ladies all came and smiled everytime they helped. my brother asked for boiled bean sprouts and they came out with one dish of boiled for him, one non boiled for me. when i asked for extra cilantro, they saw me and my bro addin it in, so they brought us another one. the lady at the cashier even chatted with my brother if it was his first time there. AND they all spoke decent enough english. and oh yeah, even though it was busy lunch time, our pho was out in less than 5 minutes. parking is really crappy, but thats the only real bad point. and oh yeah, their drink/dessert selection isn't so great. i wish they had a 3 color bean drink. i looked at the other customer's meals and their rice plates looked mighty good, but i must order pho when i go a pho restaurant for the first time. besides i order pho 98% of the time. i'll add another half star because the waitress was kinda smokin.

They deliver what they promise: noodles. Unfortunately, the rest seems to be lacking. The noodles are indeed fresh with that chewy bite of quality. Everything else was mighty sparse. My seafood pho, which was deemed the large size, contained two fish balls, two overcooked shrimp and two overcooked bits of squid. My husband had the tripe, beef pho. Same deal: a few pieces of each. Go for the noodles. Stay for nothing else.

First of all, I did not actually go in so I really don't have a clue as to the food. To me, however, the first imprecation tells me a lot about how my business experience will go. I called the place to ask a question and was greeted by a very rude girl on the phone, who hung up on me after failing to answer my question. A place that is rude to me the first moment does not deserve my money. Maybe if their employees would conduct themselves in a more professional manor, I might consider going in to sample the food.

The rice plates have a lot of rice, but NOT enough meat or egg rolls . The food was tasty, so I cant complain too much. The prices are reasonable since there aren't many Vietnamese places in this area.

I really like this place. The pho, the cold noodles, and the rice plates are all really good. Just dont order their plum juice or soda drink, it's really weird tasting, salty, not sweet.

Great little place for noodles. The menu is simple, but has most everything you would want from a Vietnamese casual restaurant. It's probably the best pho place in the Peninsula. The pho is tasty. I also like the seafood egg noodles with the juicy prawns and assortment of meat/seafood toppings. The egg rolls were also very good. I didn't care for the taro rolls too much. Service is nice and attentive. The restaurant is clean and decor is pleasant. It's in a mildly funky part of town, but once you'd adjust to it, it's no big deal. Prices are a little higher than a typical pho place, but considering this is the Peninsula, they're still very reasonable ($6-$7 for a bowl of pho, egg noodles are $7.50-$8, egg rolls $4.95). I introduce this place to my friends whenever I have a chance.

I have only been here twice, but both times this place has produced great food at a great price. If you want ambiance this is not the place, but if you want good, fresh, fast noodles you can't beat it. Went there last night with Mom on the way to Sigona's- we started with the fresh spring rolls, then I had bun (cold noodles) with vegetarian egg rolls, Mom had shrimp and pork noodle soup. The spring rolls were tasty and the bun was great. Crisp pickled veggies, soft noodles, crispy hot egg rolls, tasty fish sauce, how can you lose? Mom loved her soup so much she was stuffed but didn't want to stop eating so she took the rest to go. We walked out with a bill of less than $25 including the tip, you can't beat that! The hot sauce on the table with the chili flakes in oil is addicting! Super hot, super flavorful, and even though my mouth was on fire I couldn't stop eating the stuff on everything! The guy who works there was so nice he gave me a little container so I could take some to go. If you like pho or bun, try this place. Oh, parking is not so great but don't give up this place is worth it!

Hometown Noodle is tops on the Peninsula. They are #1 out of 13 restaurants I have eaten at. Better than average broth, decent about of noodles and meat. Although I do prefer a larger bowl, it was good enough. Usual price, better than average taste and smiling face to serve....Tops on the Peninsula!

Why go to this part of town aka Little Michoacan? For the ambience (lots of interesting stores in the neighborhood, for instance the western clothing shop with boots and hats and stuff), to practice your Spanish and to get some good food, Mexican and other cuisines too. We arrived at around 11:45 before the place filled up (by 12:30 all the tables were taken). The restaurant is simple, small and clean. When we arrived, there was a handful of incense burning (do Vietnamese businesses start their day that way? I don't know). We ordered a small pho with well done brisket +round steak, banh hoi heo quay (I think) that's the flat noodle patties with grilled pork, thai tea with boba and cafe sua da. The pho was good, but the broth was a little less flavorful than at some other places; a squirt of Sriricha fixed that. The Banh Hoi was delicious. I had never had it since I almost always order pho. Now, I'm tempted to try all of their variations on banh hoi. Their thai tea with boba and cafe sua da were made perfectly. I'm glad we tried this place because sometimes I really want some pho and like Bruno T. pointed out below, it's slim pickins for Vietnamese food in PA/MP. We'll be back.

Don't let appearances fool you. Even though it appears to be a hole-in-the-wall place, the food is very delicious and nicely presented. Had spring rolls, 2 different shrimp entrees and a vegetable one as well. My dining companion and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal.

I enjoyed the Pho. The broth was nice. More beef and tripe would help matters, but I was still satisfied. My wife's vegetarian soup too had a flavorful broth, but was missing the tofu advertised on the menu. I've gone other times and had good experiences with the Bun, Hometown Rolls (deep-fried wonders wrapped in lettuce) and tofu curry. Overall solid Vietnamese food.

I'm a big fan of this place. I always get the rice paddy noodles w pork. You wrap them up in lettuce with pickled carrots and daikon, and cilantro, then dunk in the fish sauce. Hubby loves the pho, and my daughter is a huge fan of the bbq chicken (as am I, when I've snared a piece from her).

Thanks to Yelp, I finally found a place to cure my Vietnamese noodle cravings close to home. My husband had the Pho which was not spectacular, but I had the grilled pork Bun, which was spectacular. Tasty, fast, and cheap. Yay! Note, this place is closed on Sundays. Oh, and don't bother getting the spring rolls.

I love Hometown. My girlfriend works near it, so we go here all the time. They always recognize her and know to start us off with two Thai iced teas. The pho comes out fast and it's always hot and yummy. This is pretty much our established pho restaurant.

I really like the Pho here. The best in Redwood City. I think the atmosphere is great. It is not very big, and it's owner operated.

This place is tiny -- you'll pass it if you aren't looking for it. But the pho is very tasty, especially for this area!

This is the only Pho place I will go to. For that reason I award this place with my 5 star rating. Chicken Noodle Soup or simply number 17 is the bestest. Also great for coke hangovers........

The best broth, best pho, best banh, spring rolls, imperial rolls, sandwiches, and rice plates that i have ever had. They are so nice, fast, cheap and very authentic.

By far the best pho I've had on the Penninsula. Not exactly one of RWC's finest neighborhoods, but easy access. Come for the pho, not the atmosphere, and you will be highly satisfied. The owners are very friendly and gracious

I visited this little hole in the all twice--I'd give my first experience 4* and the second 2*. While the service was above average for an Asian eatery, the food was inconsistent. I did not taste any MSG in my noodles in my first visit, but was MSG-poisoned in my secon visit. Also, I ordered Vietnamese coffee in my second visit and it was a disaster!

This is our favorite local restaurant. The staff is very friendly and the food never disappoints. I am an absolute sucker for the lemongrass calamari and shrimp. The lemongrass tofu is also excellent. The vegetarian pho is also great, full of generous helpings of tofu and bright green vegetables. The seafood pho is also generous and satisfying with large crisp prawns tender calamari and plump scallops. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. This is a great restaurant to come to with a big group or by yourself.

Went here with some coworkers and this was a good place for pho. There was a short wait to get a table, but was worth the wait. I order a x-large number 11, which came with everything. The portion was very large. The noodles were good and the brooth was great. The beef came still red, which i liked because it was more fresh. I would defintely come back here.

Probably the best Pho soup in the peninsula. But that's not saying a lot. Definitely better tasting soup than Pho Dong and much cheaper. They spend very little on decor and that means better prices.

Consistently good Pho. Tasty bbq beef with green onions. Please staff, clean although sterile dining room. Good pricing. When I set aside a couple pieces of grilled beef to take home, they were at first worried that I hadn't eaten it because of a problem and were worried. They remember customers and care about their welfare - makes you want to return.

Just had lunch with a friend here. We were both very impressed with the taro appetizer rolls, which are both very tasty and not the usual imperial or spring roll. And, they were a good value. Both of us ordered pho and, based on countless pho experiences, I was disappointed by the spare meat in the soup. I hate when I have to sparingly eat the meat with mouthfuls of noodle... I'm giving this place three stars because I'd go back for a 2nd try.

I used to work around the corner form this place and it was the best place in the area for lunch. The food is great, the staff are super friendly (it's family run), and the prices are dirt cheap. Not so swanky like a lot of stuff on the Peninsula, but if you are looking for a good noodle house you can't go wrong here. We started calling it Happy Noodle 'cuz that's how it made us feel.

Pho was really good. They have 4 different hot sauces and one sweet sauce for you to use on each table. It is nice that the noodles comes in normal size, large size, and extra large size. Can't wait to go back and try some more from their menu. Use their online menu as a reference only - the number that identifies each item on the menu online does not match the menu that they give you at the restaurant.

I've eatten at this restaurant a few times, especially during the winter time because I just love the warmth the soup gives you. I think the meat portion is pretty good, and the spices are not overpowering. If you eat in you have a choice between small or large size. However, if you order to go they only have one size (large I think). The spring rolls are really basic (noodles and shrimp), which is exactly the way I like them. No mint or other stuff that you normally find in spring rolls. The down side is the lack of parking in the area. The shoe guy next door is really anal about other customers parking in his lot and threatens to have you towed, so beware. Also the restaurant has a minimum charge of like $15 or something if you plan on paying by credit card, so bring cash.

good noodles - but why go to this part of town? Unless you're in the market for high end appliances across the street or headed to the CosmoPartyZone for a kids bday party and some serious sugar highs.

Location is a little tough to get to. I agree that the place is a little high considering the location it is in. The workers were nice but the food was average I would say. The pho could use a little more flavor but what I really didn't like was the sauce used for the noodle dishes was weak. Could use a little more punch. But can't really complain because of the limited amount of Pho restaurants here, I am glad I have this place as an option.

What can I say about Hometown Noodle except that they are awesome! Beyond awesome. I've had some pretty gross pho, but this place. The pho is priced good, and extremely flavorful. Unlike so many other Pho places, this one actually has other goodies on the menu. Everything from the beef & veggies to the egg rolls is delish! The staff, which consists of like two women, are beyond friendly. I usually go in once a week or so & the last time I went, the usual woman who takes my order wasn't there & the other woman barely speaks english, so she called on her cell the usual woman & I was able to make my order that way. I thought it was pretty funny. But the food is good, orders are always accurate, prices are fair (they did just raise the cost of the dishes with beef because they switched to a better quality cut, but the raise is minimal) atmosphere is cute & very clean. Parking can sometimes suck. There are spots right in front of the building, but a couple of times i've had to park around the corner & walk. I love it!!

I go to this place on a weekly basis and they never disappoint me! It's a little hole in the wall restaurant right in the heart of Redwood City/Little Mexico. I usually get a small number 13, and there is always plenty of meat! I've tried the spring rolls and the imperial rolls, and they are all great! The Thai Ice Tea is yummy as well. It does get a bit crowded around lunch time so you might wanna get there either exactly at 12 or a few minutes before. The wait staff is good. Pretty quick, but I would recommend walking up to the cashier if you're in a hurry to get out of there, because it takes them a while to bring your check to the table, and then a few more minutes for them to pick it up. But feel free to just walk up to the cashier to take care of that. The parking situation is tough too. I usually park behind the building, but the last time I parked back there I was told by the owner of the shoe store on the corner that the parking there is ONLY for the shoe store... So you have to find parking on the street :-P But even if you have to walk around the block you won't be disappointed. And after you're tummy is full of yummy pho, you might need to walk it off. HaHaHa!

we had eaten here several times, until last week we too tried using a restaurant.com coupon. we placed it on the table for all to see, but no one took it. when my husband went up to pay he showed it to the cashier who started yelling at him that he has to show it right away and my husband told her that it was on the table the whole time and it was there in front of the guy who took our order. my husband told her it was ok if we didn't use it but she wouldn't stop like half-shouting (other people were looking to see what was going on) that we had to show it right away and that she cannot accept it. she finally did accept it but then said accusingly - you can only use this one time per month! like we had tried to use it the day before or something. i didn't appreciate her tone or the way she made a scene when we were only trying to use a coupon in which her business decided to participate. for only ok food and service at baseline, it's not cool to yell at your customers. we won't be going back.
